Mission Statement
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
About This Cause
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) is the premier youth leadership development organization for girls in Pennsylvania, serving more than 40,000 girls and engaging more than 15,000 adult volunteers each year. GSEP reaches girls between ages 5 and 17 in Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, and Philadelphia counties. The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The Girl Scouts are working to close the leadership gap that exists between men and women by giving girls guidance from an early age on how to affect positive change in the world. In the highest circles of leadership in the US, men greatly outnumber women, but women leaders have a remarkable tendency to be Girl Scouts. For instance, in the 113th US Congress, women hold only 98, or 18.3%, of the 535 seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate. However, of these 98 women, 66 were Girl Scouts. In the private sector, only 4.2% of Fortune 500 companies have a woman as their CEO, and only 3.5% of US hedge funds are run by women. However, 80% of women business owners in the US were Girl Scouts. These statistics are even more staggering when you consider that only 1 in 10 girls is a Girl Scout. The correlation between Girl Scouting and leadership is not a coincidence: 8 out of 10 Girl Scout alumnae attribute their personal and professional success to Girl Scouting. When it comes to developing girls into leaders, Girl Scouting has a proven record of success. GSEP engages girls through various program pathways. In Traditional and Funded Troops, girls convene regularly to complete activities and projects. At camp, girls explore the outdoors and participate in horseback riding, hiking, climbing, swimming, boating, archery, and more. Through single-event and series programming on special topics, girls learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), leadership, the environment, the arts, and entrepreneurship. And the cookie program teaches girls about the basics of financial literacy and decision making. All GSEP programming is guided by an overarching framework called the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), which ensures that programs help girls attain specific outcomes related to leadership.
