Mission Statement
The mission of the Carlisle Family YMCA is to promote personal growth, enhance family values, and provide community service through programs available to all, regardless of faith, age, sex, gender, race or social condition. The Y has three areas of focus: Youth Development, Health Living and Social Responsibility.
About This Cause
The Y has three areas of focus: Youth Development, Health Living and Social Responsibility. Youth Development: Nurturing the potential of every child & teen All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of caring adults who believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development. From the youngest in our child care programs to the teens in our leadership development initiatives, the Y gives kids and teens a safe place to belong, build confidence and learn positive behaviors grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Healthy Living: Improving the nation’s health and well-being At the Y, we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. The Y is a leading voice on health and well-being issues—and a leader in fighting chronic disease—and is committed to empowering people to lead fuller lives. We bring families closer together, promote healthy living and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all walks of life improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community. Social Responsibility: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors With our doors open to all, we bring together people from all backgrounds, and support those who need us most. Since 1844 internationally and 1859 here in Carlisle, we have taken on the most urgent needs in our community and inspired a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together. The Y is committed to empowering people with the resources and support needed to live healthy, connected and secure lives. We have members who range in age from 6 months to 93 years; there is something at the Y for everybody. Y membership opens the door for youth, families and seniors to the great variety of physical, recreational, wellness and social activities available at the Y including the Exer-game Room, two fitness centers, pool, gymnasium and hand / racquetball courts. Y members also benefit from lower fees for programs and events. Members cite connecting with their community and others as an important component of membership value. This is especially important to older members who may no longer have families at home and count on their Y family for social engagement and emotional support. In addition to membership services our key program areas include wellness, summer camps, child care, youth teen programs, youth/teen sports, aquatic activities and education, family programs, adult activities and special events. Child Care, state licensed and Star 4 designation, serves children aged 6 months to kindergarten while their parents work. We offer age appropriate activities in a nurturing environment designed to stimulate the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. More than half of the children in our center attend through financial assistance scholarships. Day Camps serving children age 5 – 14 are held on site throughout the summer. Resident Camp for children ages 7-14 is held at Camp Thompson in Pine Grove Furnace State Park. All camps are accredited by the American Camping Association and provide an age appropriate curriculum. Day campers enjoy use of YMCA facilities in addition to camp activities. The Aquatics Program offers swims lessons for all ages, for children as young as 6 months old (with parent) through adult, in private or group format. Along with our Safety Around Water program, which is a free program offered to children from low-income families most at risk of drowning, the Y’s Aquatics Program teaches people of all ages to have fun and be safe around the water. Youth Sports such as soccer, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball and swim team, as well as other youth programs like the Y Fit and Summer Sizzle fitness programs, provide a variety of activities and programs for youth during the non-school hours, where they build healthy, positive relationships with their peers and caring adults. The Y also offers programs for adults, such as chronic disease prevention and management programs like our Diabetes Prevention Program and Arthritis Water Exercise Program. These programs, as well as many of our group fitness classes during the day, provide opportunities for our older members to socialize and to encourage each other towards their health and wellness goals. Our LifeFit program in conjunction with United Cerebral Palsy of Central PA pairs certified personal trainers and physiologists with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, in order to help increase their activity level and nutritional knowledge and to help them feel a part of a community. We also host a variety of special events throughout the year, from our signature CenturyLink 5K Turkey Trot every Thanksgiving Day, our Street Hoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament each summer, Community Days 3-4 times per year which open our doors to non-members to get to know they Y, and our Healthy Kids Day festival in April each year. We also host periodic family events like Family Swim Night, movies on the lawn, Nerf Wars, an annual Family Scavenger Hunt, in conjunction with Carlisle Summerfair, and more.
