Mission Statement

The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) is a private, non-profit organization, serving Northeastern Pennsylvania with a broad range of services. The mission of CEO is to reduce the causes and effects of poverty and increase self-sufficiency among low-income and vulnerable populations. With dozens of programs benefitting thousands of families each year, CEO relies on a variety of funding sources including private charitable donations, foundation support, corporate contributions and government grants. CEO is governed by a Board of Directors that includes three groups of constituents: representatives of the public sector, private sector and clients being served. One of CEO's largest programs is the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. The Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and distributes more than 5 million pounds of donated and commodity food each year, to a network of more than 200 partners serving almost 10,000 people each and every week. About This Cause

Mission Statement The mission of CEO is to promote self-sufficiency among low-income and vulnerable populations by confronting the causes and reducing the effects of poverty. CEO’s multiple services are based on the following goals: · Respond to basic, material needs of children, adults and seniors in poverty. · Increase economic self-sufficiency among low-income individuals and families. · Promote renewable energy and environmentally sustainable innovations to reduce the effects of poverty · Promote the positive development of low-income children, youth, and their families. · Promote the health and independence of the elderly and disabled through supportive, in-home services. · Provide leadership in policy issues affecting low-income children, adults, and seniors. The largest program of the Commission on Economic Opportunity is The Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. Housed within the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Center for Healthy Living, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Regional Food Bank services charitable organizations by providing food to alleviate hunger and promote proper nutrition, particularly among children and the elderly. The Regional Food Bank provides food assistance to Faith-based and 501(c)3 non-profit community organizations to distribute to needy families. By collecting donations of wholesome but unmarketable food from the food industry and distributing it to these organizations, the Food Bank works to reduce hunger and promote proper nutrition in addition to preventing food waste. The Food Bank serves four counties in Northeast Pennsylvania: Luzerne, Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wyoming.
