Mission Statement

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) changes the lives of people facing the impacts of poverty. For 50 years, EECM has been a community leader in addressing the issues that impact our area’s most at-risk, disadvantaged, and under-served populations. From its beginnings as an interfaith coalition of congregations, EECM has responded to community needs with programs that provide opportunity, transformation and hope to those experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, educational challenges, and barriers to employment. Today, we are proud to be considered an important community anchor not only in Pittsburgh’s East End, but throughout the city of Pittsburgh. We have been recognized for our service in meeting many of the fundamental needs of those impacted within our local communities, and have become more deeply rooted in our mission and in service to meeting these ongoing needs. Our multi-faceted programs provide: • Free meals and groceries for those struggling with hunger and food insecurity; • Assistance with securing permanent housing for those who are experiencing homelessness; • Case management for individuals and families struggling with poverty, addictions, and mental health issues; • Education and training for those with barriers to employment; • Mentoring to help urban children and youth succeed in school, make healthy decisions, explore new interests, and value themselves. We offer a community of hope, creating economic and social value for our area’s most distressed neighborhoods.

About This Cause

Programs Through our three core program areas, we significantly impact the lives of the individuals we serve on a daily basis. Community Food Services (CFS): This program focuses on providing access to healthy and nutritious food through our Food Pantry and Community Lunch. Our Community Lunch provides a free hot lunch every day Monday - Friday to all who come and coordinates/provides three meals/day to our in-house shelter clients, serving 50,000-70,000 meals annually. Our Food Pantry program provides families with healthy groceries each month, distributing over 600,000 lbs. of food. Because of partnerships with local stores such as Whole Foods, Sam’s Club, Aldi, Panera, Starbucks and Target, where we rescue expiring food weekly, 40% of the food we distribute (by weight) is produce, which is also diverted from landfills (more than 240,000 lbs. annually). Housing & Employment Services (HES): This program provides housing, case management/supportive services and educational and employment services to individuals and families with a wide array of needs. We assist those in need of shelter through our housing programs: emergency shelter and recovery housing (over 13,000-bed nights/yr.). After we provide stability of basic needs, clients work with a case manager to focus on meeting their other needs and addressing goals through personalized care plans. Case managers provide access to resources and connections to other providers and work with clients to make sure they are on track to access permanent housing. Children & Youth Services (CYS): The CYS program was implemented in the early 1980’s to address the dramatic increase in drugs, gang activity, and violence in our local communities. The CYS programming helps bridge the gap for vulnerable children by helping them build their own assets and resources to achieve their goals in life. We serve over 1,000 of our area’s urban youth through in school, after-school, and summer programs. The CYS program works to fill the need gaps and fundamentally address what is needed socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. EECM utilizes a continuum of prevention, intervention, and follow-up services to address clients’ acute and long-term needs. We work to break the systemic cycle of poverty and community dysfunction for those we serve. For families and adults who have been trapped in that cycle, providing the right shelter, food, education and employment interventions at the right time, repeatedly if needed, strengthens the foundation for recovery. Our service model places the client at the center of the treatment plan, and addresses the full range of acute and long-term support individuals need to move out of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency.
