About This Cause

The Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, Inc. works to prevent domestic violence and empower victims to move towards self sufficiency. DAP was founded in 1976 as part of a community effort to provide safety, advocacy, and supportive services to victims of domestic violence. In 1984, DAP opened its first short term emergency shelter and remains the sole comprehensive domestic violence provider in Delaware County. The agency currently operates an emergency safe house for women, men, and children needing a safe residence that is open 365 days a year and operates a 24-hour, 7 days a week emergency hotline that is staffed by employees and volunteers. DAP also provides free legal services to victims of domestic violence and relationship abuse, as well as crisis and short term counseling to adult and youth survivors, and operates a community outreach department that works to raise awareness and provide education about domestic violence. DAP provides victims and their families with the following services and programs at no cost: Emergency shelter that is open 365 days a year for women and children needing a safe residence. Legal services to victims of domestic violence/relationship abuse which include: overview of legal services available to victims of domestic violence, representation of clients during temporary and permanent Protection from Abuse Orders (PFA’s), and assistance with client restitution and other programs offered to victims of domestic violence. Legal advocacy services to support clients in navigating the court system, understanding their options, and obtaining additional DAP services, as well as referrals to other service providers. Short and long-term counseling services to victims of domestic violence. Child and adolescent counseling is also available. Outreach and educational awareness programs and domestic violence/ teen relationship abuse prevention programs for schools throughout Delaware County. DAP provides trainings to students, teachers, college and university staff and students, and local community and civic groups. Thrift store in the community, Thrift and Thrive, and proceeds from the sale of goods go to funding DAP’s services. The store also provides a mechanism for community outreach about DAP’s services and is staffed by a large group of volunteers.
