Mission Statement
Started in 1973, the mission of the Bucks County Choral Society is to give memorable performances of outstanding choral music and to enrich the community through the choral music experience. The Choral Society fulfills its mission by: - reflecting the highest aspirations of our community for artistic expression and providing an important creative outlet for community singers from all walks of life; - presenting an annual series of varied subscription concerts in broadly accessible Bucks County venues; - supporting the creative environment of our community by working with local composers through performances and special commissions; - giving special attention to the support of aspiring young performers, composers and teachers in our community's outstanding school choral programs; and - reaching out to our significant and ever-growing population of seniors, especially those for whom singing or listening to choral music might otherwise be inaccessible. It is the vision of the Choral Society to share the world's great choral music with the broadest audience possible at the highest collective level of performance of which we are capable.
About This Cause
The Choral Society, started in 1973, is a 100-voice auditioned symphonic choir that performs a series of four concert programs annually, and is recognized as the area's premier large choral ensemble. It has a reputation both regionally as well as internationally. The Choral Society performs an extensive repertoire of music, ranging from classical to contemporary including major masterworks, opera, musical theater, African-American spirituals, sacred jazz, as well as contemporary commissioned works from both local and nationally acclaimed composers. One of the organizations hallmarks is its annual collaborations with leading soloists, orchestras, children's choirs, etc., both regionally and nationally. The Bucks County Choral Society has some of the largest audiences of any choral group in the region with between 3,500 and 4,000 individuals attending annually. This includes individuals from a number of counties surrounding Bucks County including Philadelphia, Montgomery and Berks counties, as well as from communities in New Jersey and as far away as New York and Florida. In addition, the Choral Society serves the community through scholarship programs and solo performance opportunities for young singers in our "Voices of the Future" program for choral students who live in and/or go to school in Bucks County. This program includes a master class for the finalists as well as other students participating in the program with a renowned singer and voice teacher. In addition, the Choral Society's acclaimed “Singing for Seniors” program, involving hundreds of local seniors is held twice annually with singing festivals taught by an expert choral director, teaching the seniors new music and letting them know you can learn at any age. The Choral Society's longevity can be attributed to two dedicated and inspiring artistic directors. Elma Heckler served as the artistic director from 1977 to the year 2000, and Thomas Lloyd, Ph.D., has served from the 2000 to the present (currently his 20th season). The Society has been on nine national and international tours under Thomas Lloyd, with the last tour in the summer of 2018 to Cuba. In 2012, Lloyd was the only choral director named to a list of area arts leaders considered to be a "Creative Connector" by Leadership Philadelphia, a program of WHYY and the Knight Foundation, for his extensive work in arranging collaborative performances with artists both in the region and around the world. In addition to being a singer and conductor, he is also a composer. In 2016, his new composition "Bonhoeffer" was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Choral Performance category, which was recording by The Crossing Choir. This was a first nomination for Thomas Lloyd as well as Donald Nally, artistic director of The Crossing. Lloyd has written two new pieces since that time, which will be premiered in 2020.
