Mission Statement
The mission of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP) is to abolish the death penalty in the United States and support efforts to abolish the death penalty worldwide.
About This Cause
The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty is the nation's oldest organization dedicated exclusively to ending capital punishment. It leads a national movement against the death penalty fueled by a broad-based national constituency and more than 100 affiliate organizations. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has begun to reframe the debate on capital punishment by seeking to focus attention on the increasing number and breadth of opposition and concern about capital punishment. We have launched the 90 Million Strong Campaign, a coalition effort which seeks to mobilize the 90 million Americans who think the death penalty is wrong or unfair. We have taken advantage of the recent public attention accompanying the botched executions in Ohia, Oklahoma and Arizona to be more visible and vocal in our opposition. We sought to publicize and raise public awareness about the fact that public support for the death penalty is waning and the executions currently taking place are increasingly isolated and extreme in nature. We carried this message on four national TV outlets including MSNBC; three international TV outlets including Britain’s Channel 4 News; four major national print outlets including The Atlantic and the New York Times; three national online outlets including The National Law Journal; four national radio outlets including All Things Considered; and two international radio programs including BBC Radio and Voice of America. In addition, the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty provides high-level strategic advice and assistance to a network of state leaders and litigators across the countries who are engaged in efforts to change public policy and prevent people from being sentenced to death and executed. In 2013 Governor Martin O’Malley signed legislation repealing the death penalty in Maryland. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty organized events in key legislative districts and speaking engagements throughout the state to raise public awareness and mobilize support for repeal. These efforts were critical to the success of a broad coalition of Maryland citizens. We made significant progress toward repeal in Colorado, Kansas and New Hampshire. In both Colorado and Kansas we invested significant resources to work with activists. In Kansas, we worked closely with advocates in the state in the recent legislative session to defeat legislation that would have shortened the opportunity to review capital cases and increased the risk of executing innocent people. The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty’s support of litigation efforts in capital cases has resulted in two capital defendants receiving life without parole instead of death sentences. In Mississippi our collaborative organizing and communications efforts assisted legal counsel in successfully overturning the death sentence of a condemned prisoner who was likely innocent of the crime for which she had been sentenced to die. Going forward we see our role as one of continuing to shape the national debate on the issue by demonstrating that there is a broad-based, significant and diverse constituency of organizations and individuals who are committed to bringing about a new definition of justice—one that ends capital punishment and embraces the value of respect for the dignity of every individual, tangible support for all victims of crime and homicide and a fair distribution of resources to ensure that all communities have an opportunity to be safe and to thrive.
