Mission Statement
Share Food Program leads the fight against food insecurity in the Philadelphia region, by serving an expansive, quality partner network of community-based organizations and school districts engaged in food distribution, education and advocacy.
About This Cause
Share Food Program (Share) is deeply committed to meeting the basic needs of our most vulnerable communities through a range of hunger-relief initiatives and programming. Targeting the poorest zip codes in our region, these high-impact programs include: Pantry Program: Share's Partner Pantry Program is the primary method by which Share delivers state, federal, and donated food to our food sites. Through this program, Share collaborates with a vast network of community-based organizations throughout Philadelphia county to provide nutritious food to those facing food insecurity. Share is also the lead agency for state and federal food distribution in both Delaware and Montgomery counties, and has recently acquired two satellite warehouses to serve as the counties’ respective central distribution hubs. National School Lunch Program (NSLP): Share is the only nonprofit in the country to manage its regional NSLP contract. Share provides direct delivery of USDA commodity foods to schools located in Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Bucks counties. All students are eligible to access NSLP at the school where they attend. Through this program Share, provides free and reduced breakfast and lunches to the region’s 305,000 students. Philly Food Rescue (PFR): One of the largest food rescue organizations in the region, PFR is the sustainability and food recovery arm of Share. Centering the principles of food sovereignty and community care, PFR works to increase access to nutritionally-dense foods by rescuing surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, farmers' markets, wholesalers, and distributors, and redistributing this food to our partner network of community organizations, schools, places of worship, and more. Nice Roots Farm: Share’s onsite urban agriculture project harvests and donates over 4,000 pounds of fresh produce to the community through Share-affiliated pantries and mutual aid groups every year. The main function of Nice Roots Farm is to serve as a demonstration and educational space for those interested in exploring the impacts of urban farming and gardening on hunger in local and regional contexts. In addition to farm-to-school classes, the Farm hosts monthly Community Farming Days between March and November. Senior Food Box Program (also known as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program/CSFP): During COVID-19, Share Food Program has been providing free boxes of food to qualifying seniors through this USDA-managed federal program; eligible recipients are entitled to one 30-lb. box of nutritious, shelf-stable products each month. We work with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania to administer the program in four counties including Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester. Seniors have the option of picking food up from a convenient site near them or having it delivered to their home. We are now bringing food to 6,000 seniors through this program, in partnership with more than 90 senior sites in the region, and delivering food boxes directly to 2,000 seniors a month.
