Mission Statement
Transforming lives by repairing homes for low-income families and sharing the hope found in Jesus Christ.
About This Cause
Good Works is a faith based 501 (c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1988 and dedicated to helping low-income families who do not have the ability to help themselves. Families living in unhealthy and inadequate homes are faced with health and safety hazards everywhere they turn. Those dangers are easy to see, not as evident are the effects these conditions have on the people themselves. We find very little joy or sense of dignity in their lives and hardly a shred of hope – but everyone benefits when people from different races, cultures, and backgrounds join together to improve the living conditions for these homeowners and their families. Using volunteers, who desire to improve the lives of low-income families in their communities, Good Works transforms unsafe houses into warm, safe, dry homes, and despair into hope. We serve all 49 of the 73 municipalities that make up Central and Northern Chester County through volunteer staging sites in Coatesville, Exton, Phoenixville and St. Peters. Volunteers accomplish most of the repairs, with our Repair Supervisor and Technicians supporting their efforts. We also hire contractors to do repairs that our staff cannot do, or where it would not be safe for volunteers, such as working on roofs with a steep pitch. Applicants need to own the home, be below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, and have their property taxes current or be on an approved payment plan. Our services are offered at no cost and every dollar goes a long way because volunteers do most of the repairs. Since 1988, volunteers have donated over 775,000 hours to help families in their community, and we have completed over 1,100 homes! Our enthusiastic team of volunteers and professionals labor side-by-side to accomplish whatever is needed to repair homes that are in serious and dangerous disrepair. The work we provide includes roof replacement and repair, plumbing installation and repair, electrical rewiring and code compliance, heating system and hot water heater installation and repair, insulation and drywall replacement, window and door replacement, repairing floors and stairs, making homes handicap accessible and mold remediation. Our mission is: Transforming lives by repairing homes for low-income families and sharing the hope found in Jesus Christ. Our goal is to help these families remain in their home, a home that is now a safe and healthy environment for the whole family. The dynamics of our mission are: • To provide home repairs at no charge, improving the quality of life for everyone in the family. • To unite local individuals, businesses, and churches in a single compassionate purpose. • To dramatically increase the return on each dollar invested by using volunteers to make repairs.
