Mission Statement
Historic Fair Hill’s mission is to: 1) preserve our historic Quaker burial ground, and assure that its history and the ideals of the people interred there continue to speak to the world, and 2) act as a collaborative partner in the revitalization of the Fairhill community through school partnerships for literacy, greening, and community engagement events.
About This Cause
Historic Fair Hill is a peaceful green space that has endured, felt, and witnessed history and change for three hundred years. From Lenni-Lenape land, to Quaker Meetinghouse and burial grounds, to Underground Railroad stop, to Badlands and now, a quiet sanctuary for many. The burial ground is not only the resting place of historical activist heavy-hitters such as Lucretia Mott, Robert Purvis, and Mary Anne M’Clintock who advocated and fought for equality and justice. Historic Fair Hill is also a gathering spot, park, National Historic Site on the Underground Railroad Network and a designated Zone of Peace. It sits in the center of the Fairhill neighborhood: a community challenged by trauma, lack of access, the highest rates of poverty and violence in the City of Philadelphia. However, it is also blessed with residents who are determined, passionate, civic-minded trailblazers who address and solve all challenges confronting their community together with the Historic Fair Hill organization. The burial ground is also home to more than 150 trees as a Level 1 arboretum that stretches for 5 rolling acres. As Historic Fair Hill responds to the needs of our Fairhill neighbors/partners and buried tenants, we host tours, classrooms, community gatherings, and manage satellite gardens which grow and distribute healthy food at weekly farm stands. In four neighborhood schools, Historic Fair Hill has reopened and currently staffs school libraries with volunteers such as reading partners and bilingual parent assistants, transforming the libraries into fun and inviting centers of learning.
