About This Cause
In 2014, Holy Family Institute founded Nazareth Prep high school to connect our historical mission of hope with the unique needs of twenty-first century youth. Nazareth Prep currently serves more than 200 students from the Greater Pittsburgh region’s most historically underserved minority neighborhoods. Nazareth Prep has a unique curriculum focused on workforce development and STEM skills so that students leave high school with the skills and experience to enter the workforce. All students not only receive an exceptional education focused on next-generation skills, but also spend one day each week in a workplace internship aligned with their career interests. Nazareth Prep serves 200 students in grades nine through twelve as one of the largest private schools in the Pittsburgh region serving primarily Black students. Last year, 81% of enrolled students were Black, 10% were biracial, 7% were White, and 2% identified as “unknown” or “other.” Although Nazareth Prep is a Catholic high school, 92% of students do not identify as Catholic and we serve students from a variety of faith backgrounds. Most Nazareth Prep students come from low-income households, with 45% of family income under $30,000 and another 36% between $30,000 and $50,000. All Nazareth Prep students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Tuition is based on family income, however all families are expected to contribute. Over 95% of our families receive scholarship assistance and the average family contribution is less than $1,600. Students from the Class of 2021 received acceptances to more than 50 colleges and universities – including Boston University, Howard University, Washington and Jefferson College, and the University of Pittsburgh – and pursued apprenticeships in pharmacy technology, electrical engineering, construction, and nursing. The school has celebrated five graduating classes that together total 182 students. Of these graduates, 124 students pursued college, 36 students pursued apprenticeships or technical training, and 22 students immediately entered careers. This diversity of career pathways demonstrates our commitment to providing individualized support and guidance to suit each student’s unique needs. This class profile points to the resilience, ambition, and integrity common among our students, and the ability of our model to prepare students from all backgrounds for future leadership in our region. Nazareth Prep is currently undertaking a major project to build a new science and athletics facility to expand the resources available to students and be a place where they can tap into their unlimited potential. The building will enhance the school’s STEM offerings through new physical sciences and physical education classrooms. The new athletics spaces will allow the school to field teams and host sporting events that contribute to team-building and a sense of community as well as promote health and wellness.
