Mission Statement
Founded in 1966, Theatre Flamenco works to enrich, entertain and through the magical art of flamenco. We produce richly conceptual shows in collaboration with local and international artists, we teach and mentor new flamenco dancers, and we maintain strong ties to the traditional and modern flamenco communities of Spain. Our productions showcase premiere talent, vivid dance imagery, and flamenco’s living lineage to audiences in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
About This Cause
Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco was the first American dance company to stage full productions of Spanish dance in the U.S., and is one of the oldest dance companies in California. Every year since its inception the company has presented a home season of performances in San Francisco, and it has served as a beacon of cultural pride, a reservoir for the diverse traditions of Spanish culture, and a vital source for artistic collaboration. A non-profit 501c3 organization, the company is governed by a board of directors and receives its funding from ticket sales for performances and master classes, grants from government agencies, private foundations and corporations, and sponsorships and donations from individual donors. It also operates the Otra Vez boutique, which stocks used and new flamenco costumes, accessories and music. The company and the Otra Vez boutique are located in the Theatre Flamenco Dance Studio in the lively Mission District of San Francisco. Every year since its inception, the company has presented a fall home season of performances in the Bay Area. The company has received two nominations for the prestigious Isadora Duncan Award (“Izzies”): in 2009 for Performance-Ensemble in the show Encuentro at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, and in 2011 for Music for the 45th Home Season production Una Nota Flamenca. In November 2016, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary with three home season performances featuring 26 guest artists in the Bay Area and two performances in Southern California that reached more than 2,000 audience members. In 2017 Our Artistic director Carola Zertuche was invited to choreograph La Traviata for San Francisco Opera. Our last Home season in 2020 before the pandemic Soul Y Alma with Glade ensamble was name as one best performance of the year with a sold out house at herbs theater in San Francisco.
