About This Cause

n 1969, a group of parents from Alexandria, Louisiana, made a decision to found a new school. Already highly involved in efforts to improve our community, they wanted a school which would provide the best possible education for their children and other children, too. Included in their numbers were doctors, attorneys, business owners, and stay-at-home moms. However, none of them were educators. Committees were established to find a location for the school as well as an administrator, faculty members, a curriculum, and, of course, funding to pay for it all. Alexandria Academy became a reality later that year. The school first opened in an old public school building in Pineville, Louisiana. In 1971, Alexandria Academy moved to its present location at 5603 Bayou Rapides Road, Alexandria. With the move came a new name, Alexandria Country Day School. The new campus consisted of a main building for classrooms, a library, administrative offices and an open-air pavilion for sports. There were twenty-seven teachers and two hundred thirty-two students. Over the last forty years, the spacious campus has evolved to accommodate an ever growing student body. Today, the Main Building, home to administration and grades 5-8, and three additional classroom buildings (grades PreK 3-K, 1-2, and 3-4) easily accommodate a faculty and staff of forty-seven and five hundred twenty students. The pavilion has been enclosed to create a multi-season gym and a spacious cafeteria has been built. Outside of class, students relax on the patio by the cafeteria, play on the well-equipped playground, or run on the paved track around the soccer field. The jewel of the campus is the Katie S. Smith Multi-Media Center. Completed in 2002, this building houses an 18,000 volume library, a multimedia center complete with twenty-four laptops, and a twenty-four computer student lab. Two mobile laptop labs provide classroom opportunities for word processing and online project research. Both the media room and the lab as well as every classroom on the campus were recently equipped with Promethean boards for interactive teaching and learning. A newly acquired video lab even allows for student video productions. Country Day has a long commitment to innovative teaching. An outdoor school enriched the 1970s, followed by a speed reading lab in the 1980s. Kaleidoscope, a two-week enrichment class taught by local business people and community members, made the long mid-winter more exciting in the 1990s. Today, both interactive lessons on the Promethean boards and Kagan Structures cooperative learning enrich our students' experience in the classroom. Country Day is ever evolving to meet the needs of twenty-first century learners and beyond.
