AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HEMATOLOGY

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20036-3530 United States

Mission Statement

With more than 15,000 members from nearly 100 countries, the American Society of Hematology (ASH) is the world's largest professional society serving both clinicians and scientists around the world who are working to conquer blood diseases. In the developing world, ASH members conduct targeted training and education to provide local healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve hematology patient care in their countries, addressing priority diseases such as sickle cell disease and adult and pediatric leukemias.

About This Cause

The Society's mission is to further the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the blood, bone marrow, and the immunologic, hemostatic and vascular systems, by promoting research, clinical care, education, training, and advocacy in hematology. Through its many philanthropic initiatives in the developing world, ASH is helping to improve hematology patient care in under-resourced environments where the patient burden is often staggering. Volunteer programs in Africa, Latin America and Asia bring ASH experts to the local institutions to provide hands-on training in clinics and laboratories to address priority diseases such as sickle cell disease, adult and pediatric leukemia, and thalassemia. The Visitor Training Program provides grants to hematologists or hematology-related healthcare professionals in the developing world to engage in 12 weeks of targeted training at the institution of an ASH host mentor to learn skills and procedures needed to address hematology patient care at the trainee's home institution. The program is designed to provide the trainee with the skills and knowledge he or she needs to implement advanced patient care in treatment and diagnostics at their home institutions in the developing world. The ASH International Consortium on Acute Leukemia institutes standard of care protocols in Latin America that have greatly increased the survival rate of patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia in member countries. The network of five South American countries continually works to expand the reach of this program and the patients it touches. It is currently expanding the disease types it addresses to include acute myelogenous leukemia, another blood cancer prevalent in many developing countries. These and other philanthropic programs help improve the quality of hematology patient care in areas where this is needed most. The continuance and expansion of these very important programs is reliant on contributions from individuals and organizations outside of ASH that want to join in the fight against blood diseases worldwide.
