Mission Statement
The Animal Protective League is dedicated to caring for ill, injured and abused homeless animals and coordinating the adoption of those animals by responsible pet owners; it further is committed to ending companion animal overpopulation by offering high quality, low-cost spay/neuter services.
About This Cause
Every year, the Animal Protective League rescues more than 2,000 kittens, puppies, and adult cats and dogs who have been surrendered to animal-control facilities or left to fend for themselves only to fall victim to illness, injury, or abuse. By specializing in caring for sick, injured, and abandoned cats and dogs, APL ensures that those most at risk for euthanasia get a second chance at life. As a not-for-profit, APL receives no government funds, relying on the support of individuals, businesses, and charitable foundations. APL operates a shelter that houses 150 cats and dogs undergoing veterinary treatment or awaiting adoption. Next door is a self-supporting spay/neuter clinic where veterinarians provide high-quality, low-cost services for pets owned by individuals, rescue organizations, and animal-control agencies in Central Illinois. To reduce the number of free-roaming cats, APL offers reduced-cost spay/neuter of feral cats. To ensure the health of pets, APL offers spay/neuter assistance, low-cost vaccine clinics, and a pet-food-bank for struggling pet owners. Volunteers are a vital part of APL’s success, with community members assisting staff with such daily tasks as cleaning and dog-walking, adoption events, fundraising, and maintenance. Teens are invited to participate in a junior volunteer program offered each summer. Currently paused are visits to nearly 20 area nursing homes by volunteers who take gentle puppies and kittens to enrich the lives of residents. Humane education, most often provided to after-school groups and scouting organizations have been curtailed until in-person sessions are resumed.
