About This Cause
The Volunteer Services Council sole purpose is to support the residents that live at the Lufkin State Supported Living Center. The Lufkin State Supported Living Center (Lufkin SSLC) falls under the Health and Specialty Care System. It includes nine state hospitals and thirteen living centers across Texas in addition to Waco Center for Youth, which is a residential youth center for people with mental health issues. Since 1962, when LfSSLC took over an Air Force radar base in Pollok, Texas, the facility has provided 24-hour residential services and currently serves a little under 250 people with profound to mild intellectual and physical disabilities. The center is sometimes thought of as a mini city as it sits on almost 160 acres with twenty-two campus homes divided into four units. Within the four units we serve both men and women. All units can provide 24-hour nursing services. Two of these units provide medical services to medically fragile people. Programming and services include physician, behavioral health, nursing, dental, physical and speech therapies as well as vocational programs, skills training, leisure, and spiritual services. We also have our own beauty shop, diner, infirmary, Chapel, gym, pool and Woodland Retreat with fishing pond and nature trails. We serve all ages 10-87; our children attend Center ISD or the on-campus classroom; young adults thru middle aged work at our on-campus workshops through contracts with local businesses. Others work off campus at nursing homes, retail stores, restaurants, lawn, and janitorial services. Older adults are retired and enjoy leisure activities. To live at a state supported living center you must have been given the diagnosis of intellectual disabilities (ID) by the age of 18 years old. There have been over 200 causes identified that cause intellectual and developmental disabilities before birth or before the age of 18, some you may be familiar with is down syndrome traumatic brain injury. However as many as 30-40% of individuals with ID; there is no clear cause. ID is associated with limited intellectual capacity and is usually a permanent condition. There are four levels of ID: Profound, Severe, Moderate and Mild. 95% of people with ID fall in the Mild to moderate level. Intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illness are not the same condition, although they can occur in the same person. Mental Illness is not associated with a particular level of intelligence, it can occur at any age and can be temporary and/or treatable. The State Hospitals support people with the mental illness diagnosis. But a person with ID can become mentally ill and be treated for their mental illness. We are an active treatment facility so at all-time our individuals are working on learning. We have even had some residents participating in classes through our local community college, Angelina College. Our goal is to actively seek community placement for people who are ready for transition. It is very important to LfSSLC to educate the next generation through our intern program. The Center supports many colleges such as, Angelina College, Stephen F. Austin, Lone Star, UT Arlington, UT Tyler, Tyler Jr. College, Texas A&M, and others through intern opportunities. The intern programs include, Behavioral Health Specialist, Dietitian, Human Resources / Administrative Services, Orientation and Mobility, Nursing, Nurse practitioner, Pharmacist, Psychology, Social Worker and Speech and Physical Therapy and many more. Our intern’s clock over 3600 hours of service a year.
