About This Cause
Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia (MCP) is thrilled to celebrate its 150th anniversary during the 23-24 season. MCP has a rich and storied history as one of the nation’s premiere choral ensembles with a mission of fostering artistry, beauty, and belonging by singing together to illuminate our shared human experiences. Founded in 1874 as an eight-part male chorus by William Wallace Gilchrist, MCP now includes over 130 mixed voices of diverse age, background, and profession. MCP is currently led by its Artistic Director and Conductor Dominick DiOrio, a conductor and composer who has won widespread acclaim for his contributions to American music. MCP’s primary activities include performing choral works of the past along with commissioning and premiering new works at the highest artistic level. From its early years the chorus has enjoyed a performing relationship with the Philadelphia Orchestra, beginning with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in 1904 and continuing today with the annual Glorious Sound of Christmas. Since 1990 Mendelssohn Chorus has commissioned and premiered more than 75 works, earning it two ASCAP/Chorus America Awards for Adventurous Programming. Its recording of Philadelphia composer Vincent Persichetti’s Winter Cantata was nominated for a 1985 Grammy Award and its Anthracite Fields by Julia Wolfe won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Music. In 2019, MCP was honored to host the national Chorus America Conference in Philadelphia. In addition to programming its own concert season, MCP serves as a musical incubator for early career professional singers and conductors through section leader and conducting apprenticeship programs
