The urgent mission of The Foundation Fighting Blindness is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher Syndrome, and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases.
About This Cause
The urgent mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, Inc. (FFB) is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases. Over 10 million Americans of every age and race are affected by these devastating diseases. Foundation-funded researchers are developing promising treatments for these retinal diseases including: gene therapy, retinal cell transplantation, pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies, and retinal prosthetic devices. The continued support of FFB has brought some of these groundbreaking therapies forward to human clinical trials and more are scheduled to start in the near future. Effective and lasting treatments and cures for those affected by retinal degenerative diseases are now on the horizon. Since its inception in 1971, FFB has funded thousands of studies at hundreds of prominent institutions around the world. FFB has 50 volunteer-led chapters across the United States. These dedicated groups sponsor a variety of fundraising events and outreach programs, raising money for research and increasing awareness of FFB and its mission. They provide support and information to affected individuals and their families within their own communities through regular meetings. Many FFB Chapters sponsor local support groups aimed at helping individuals with retinal degenerative diseases and their families cope with a variety of issues related to vision loss. FFB’s Information and Referral Department provides patients and families affected by retinal degenerative diseases with disease-specific information free of charge. FFB’s website, www.FightingBlindness.org, and its two newsletters, InFocus and InFocus Online, also provided at no cost, provide timely information on the most up-to-date research and clinical trial information for all retinal degenerative diseases. Additionally, FFB hosts a number of educational seminars, known as the “Vision Seminar Series,” in cities across the United States. Each year, thousands of people affected by retinal diseases attend these free half-day seminars to learn about promising research, low vision aids, and healthy lifestyle choices. The Foundation also provides free information to retinal specialist practices across the country through the Partners for Retinal Health program.
