About This Cause

The SED Center empowers the community through education development programs, to achieve personal and academic goals to ensure a healthier, prosperous and fulfilling future for our students. The Spanish Education Development (SED) Center was founded in 1971 when a group of community leaders and parents joined to establish daycare services for their children. These services became the first bilingual preschool in Washington, DC. As the population increased and diversified, the SED Center developed programs to meet the changing needs of a wider range of Latino immigrants and their children. Today, the SED Center serves over 700 families a year through child development and adult education programs. Programs Children’s Program: The SED Center is currently licensed to serve 161 children ages 3 months to 4 years-old. Our children's program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) at the gold tier, the highest level of program quality. In 2016 the White House provided SED with a special recognition as a Bright Spot in Educational Excellence for Hispanics for decades of exceptional work towards closing the achievement gap and empowering Latino families. Adult Program: The SED Center serves approximately 500 students a year, mostly Latino, living in the D.C. metropolitan area. Learners can choose between weekday, weeknight and weekend classes. The SED Center is the only nonprofit provider of ESOL classes in the District that has an in-house, 13-hour training for all teachers and a 6-hour orientation for students. Additionally SED offers GED and Computer classes. Volunteer Program: It provides the SED Center with valuable people who contribute to the development and enhancement of the Center's community programs. Volunteers are appropriately trained by SED to serve as teacher-aides in the Children’s and Adult Education. Programs. As a result of their participation, low income immigrants students receive a greater and a more personalized exposure to the English language and to representatives of US culture. An average of 253 volunteers serving nearly 1,000 students, contribute more than 12,436 hours per year to the various programs. For over 48 years, the SED Center has provided bilingual, high-quality, academic programs, to Washington D.C. residents mostly Latino from low-income backgrounds.
