Mission Statement
Earthwatch is a nonprofit that connects people with scientists to protect the planet. Since 1971, we've mobilized over 200,000 volunteers to take action on critical environmental challenges. By engaging students, teachers, corporate employees, community members, and the public, we are expanding the reach of environmental science, research, and conservation far beyond academic circles.
About This Cause
Since its founding in 1971, Earthwatch has been taking action to address global change through a time-tested model of "citizen science" and community engagement. By pairing volunteers from all sectors of society with researchers worldwide, Earthwatch teams have helped safeguard critical habitats, conserve biodiversity, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources. Earthwatch supports scientists who produce meaningful research that informs the innovative solutions needed to solve the world's most pressing environmental challenges. But these scientists can't do it alone. Our model allows people to experience scientific research first-hand and empowers them to contribute to solving problems both locally and globally. Every person has something to contribute towards a better future. When people feel a sense of belonging, they are equipped with the power to create change towards a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. We work with various partners, including corporations, foundations, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions, to implement sustainable policies, processes, and practices that promote environmental responsibility in and out of the office. We support nearly 30 research projects globally yearly that produce rigorous, relevant, and impactful science. In addition to field research expeditions, organizations can partner with Earthwatch to offer unique hands-on professional development experiences all over the globe. Earthwatch also delivers virtual science-based programs demonstrating a strong link between sustainability and business practices. As stewards of knowledge, Earthwatch is committed to helping educators and students discover and protect our environment through transformational learning experiences that promote environmentally sustainable action. Each year, we award hundreds of fully-funded fellowships to students and teachers from underserved and underrepresented communities so that they can participate in expeditions. We acknowledge that science has a history of being exclusive. Building a diverse and equitable environment takes ongoing work and attention. At Earthwatch, we still have progress to make and are committed to addressing barriers that prevent all perspectives from being present in STEM. By creating opportunities for people regardless of their scientific, educational, or social background, we aim to impact conservation and sustainability significantly.
