Mission Statement
To serve as a community of hope and recovery for all women and their families who strive to live healthy, resilient lives.
About This Cause
The mission of Nexus Family Recovery Center (also known as Nexus) is to serve as a community of hope and recovery for all women and their families who strive to live healthy, resilient lives. Previously known as High Hopes Rehabilitation Center, Nexus was founded by a group of women in long-term recovery and established in 1971 as a structured living and social detoxification program for women. In 1990, Nexus moved to an 11-acre campus in East Dallas to provide a wider array of services and reach more women in need. More space enabled Nexus to begin allowing children to accompany their mothers into treatment. Providing childcare for women with children was very important in supporting women as a whole because, for many, the lack of childcare challenged their ability to access substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Also, to bridge the gap for pregnant women in need of SUD treatment, in 1993 Nexus began providing treatment to this vulnerable population and remains one of the few providers in the state of Texas serving pregnant women at any stage of their pregnancy. At Nexus, we seek to serve as a link to recovery and independence, while inspiring hope, offering respect, and honoring the unique differences of females seeking recovery. As a rehabilitation center that serves both women and their children through a continuum of care treatment program (which includes a Child Development Center for children impacted by parental substance use), the strength of our organization stems from our holistic approach to treatment that not only addresses a woman’s substance use disorder, but also the causal factors and consequences that challenge their ability to live an independent and self-directed life. For 53 years, Nexus has provided access to treatment for women and families impacted by SUDs, regardless of their ability to pay. The majority of Nexus clients are low-income women (98% of clients) with histories of incarceration, sexual and domestic violence, sexual exploitation, and housing instability. This positionality has often resulted in challenges with access to basic needs and treatment. Also, the inability to properly nurture her children and the fear of losing custody challenge a woman’s access and ability to complete treatment. To address this, our gender-specific and trauma-responsive continuum of care treatment program is individualized to bridge gender and racial equity gaps and address the needs of both women and their accompanying children. Continually striving for excellence through its continuum of care treatment program, Nexus has been accredited by The Joint Commission since 2006, which is rare in the non-profit sector due to the high standards required to earn and maintain. Nexus also holds licenses from the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and the Health and Human Services (HHS) for its treatment services and the childcare center, respectively.
