Mission Statement
InvestED's mission is to provide immediate help for students in need. We partner with nearly 700 secondary schools across Washington State to increase access to educational opportunity that would otherwise be unavailable. Our program directly connects students from low-income families and communities to positive academic and enrichment activities. We help Washington’s students Get to School, Engage in School, and Graduate on time.
About This Cause
InvestED fills a unique role on a statewide scale, cultivating a strong network of secondary schools that empowers trained school employees to immediately resolve urgent needs of low income students. InvestED’s model is simple but powerful, centered on trusting educators to make the decisions about how funds are best used to support students. Educators know their students and understand their unique challenges. With InvestED, there is no paperwork for students to complete or permission slips for parents to sign. Whenever an educator sees a student in need, they are able to intervene immediately and remove the barrier preventing that child from fully engaging in school. We require each partner school to establish a team comprised of the principal and two InvestED program coordinators. Teachers, counselors, and other caring adults who have direct contact with students use their professional discretion to identify student barriers to participation and enrichment, and can then work with a program coordinator to access the school's InvestED fund and facilitate purchase of a requested item within clear InvestED guidelines. Funds are never transferred to students; program coordinators purchase items or provide vouchers based on the practical needs of the situation. This ensures that students' immediate needs are resolved as directly as possible, and guarantees clear accountability and data tracking. We offer program coordinators support and training through one-on-one phone calls, online training modules, and cloud-based direct communication. Funds can be used for activity fees, school supplies, equipment for music or sports participation, transportation, clothing, or other items that low-income students cannot afford. InvestED determines annual support amounts for each school by a customized algorithm based on school population and relative need, percent of students receiving free/reduced price meals, and situational factors.
