Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide educational, recreational and heritage railroad experiences and to provide alternative transportation to and within Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Ohio Erie Canalway.
About This Cause
Founded in 1972, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is one of the oldest, longest, and most scenic tourist excursion railways in the country and the only nonprofit provider of passenger rail service within a National Park in the United States. More than 210,000 Northeast Ohio residents and visitors participate in our educational, cultural, and recreational experiences per year, riding vintage railroad cars from the 1940s-1960s through Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (one of only 49 in the country). CVSR is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates in partnership with the National Park Service as Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s alternative transportation provider. The National Park owns and maintains the track and associated infrastructure, while CVSR owns and maintains the rolling stock (trains) and provides the rail service to patrons. CVSR trains pass through the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park and travel 26 miles between Cuyahoga and Summit Counties. We provide an array of on-board programming for all ages and interests, including: scenic train service through the National Park; education programs for students offered in partnership with the National Park Service; wellness programs such as Bike Aboard!, where passengers can ride their bicycles along the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail in one direction and ride the train back to their original destination; themed event trains such as Steam in the Valley, Fall Flyer, The Polar Express, and Day Out with Thomas; family event trains such as Read Aboard, Royalty on the Rails, Superheroes on the Train, Board Games, Murder Mysteries, and History Storytelling trains; and wine-tasting and beer-tasting trains as well as brunch, lunch, and dinner excursions.
