Mission Statement

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s passionate belief that animals help people and people help animals through trust, unconditional love, and respect creates a legacy of caring. Sharing this philosophy with others, the Center inspires and teaches, locally and globally, the importance of the animal-human bond.

About This Cause

Helen Woodward Animal Center was founded by Helen Whittier Woodward, a local philanthropist dedicated to making the world a better place for people and animals. In 1972 she founded the San Dieguito Animal Care Center and envisioned a facility that would encompass comprehensive animal care and public education programs. Through her support and leadership, the facility grew into one of our area's most highly regarded animal and human service organizations. Her vision was to create a special place where "people help animals and animals help people." The overall goal of the Center is to save the lives of as many orphan animals as possible, but also to provide valuable community programs that help animals and people in need as well as strengthen the animal-human bond through humane education and training. The Center offers many animal-centered programs and services to benefit both humans and pets in our community: • Adoptions finds loving, lifelong homes for thousands of orphaned dogs and cats every year. Helen Woodward Animal Center is a no-kill shelter that works with other rescue organizations throughout the country to help them reach the same goal. • AniMeals began in 1984 when a Meals-on-Wheels driver discovered some of her clients were sacrificing their own nutrition in order to share food with their pets. AniMeals provides free food deliveries for the pets of elderly and low-income individuals enabling them to keep their lifelong companions with them at home. There are now more than 40 programs across the U.S. and Canada based on the Helen Woodward Animal Center AniMeals model. • Therapeutic Riding benefits riders of all ages who have physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Riders improve learning skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, and short-term memory. But equally important, they have fun in a safe and rewarding environment, gain confidence, and feel proud of their accomplishments. • Pet Encounter Therapy (P.E.T.) - volunteers and staff visit senior centers, psychiatric units, and youth facilities, bringing unconditional love and tactile benefits to children and adults. During our Pet Encounter Therapy visits, we’ve witnessed movement from unresponsive patients and heard words spoken for the first time by accident and stroke survivors. • Education programs teach children ages 4-14 the importance of humane treatment of all animals and introduces children to a wide variety of animal species. The Center’s philosophy comes alive through our fun, educational programs such as Critter Camp and youth outreach programs, including the AniMobile which travels to Title 1 low-income schools throughout San Diego County. • Pets Without Walls provides spay/neuter services, no-cost wellness checks, preventive medical care, vaccines, and flea and tick medication to the pets of homeless families, in addition to free pet food to the pets of those experiencing homelessness in San Diego. The food delivery is an extension of our AniMeals program, • Business of Saving Lives Workshops bring shelter directors and animal care providers from across the country and around the world together to spend four days of intense training at Helen Woodward Animal Center to learn more effective ways to run their facilities and save the lives of orphaned pets. • The Equine Hospital grants hospital privileges to equine veterinarians from across the country. Working with them, our cutting edge equipment provides treatment for racehorses, show horses, and family pets. • Club Pet Boarding treats all animal guests as VIPs (Very Important Pets). Pets receive exceptional services and individual attention from our professional caregivers, and enjoy daily doses of tender loving care, including petting, brushing, playing, and exercise. We care for dogs, cats, birds, and exotic animals in our spacious, clean, climate-controlled kennels. • Companion Animal Hospital provides veterinary care for all types of small companion animals, from cats and dogs to reptiles and birds, seven days a week. • Orphaned Objects Resale Shop is a boutique style shop that carries one-of-a-kind items including furniture, home décor, games and toys, books, jewelry, art, clothing, shoes, sports equipment, and pet products! All sales benefit the programs and pets at Helen Woodward Animal Center. The Center does not receive government funding and instead receives donations from the individuals, corporations and foundation to be able to provide our programs. We serve over 50,000 people and 10,000 animals annually through our various programs. Today, our Adoptions program saves the lives of 3,700 pets each year, and our other programs impact approximately 10,000 additional animals that we see through our hospitals, boarding facility, and AniMeals programs. Our Pet Encounter Therapy program has grown to reach over 25,000 children and adults each year, while Therapeutic Riding serves over 70 clients each week and AniMeals serves over 800 human clients every month. Our Education program now sees approximately 10,000 children each year through our Critter Camp programs as well as special tours and visits for groups.
