Mission Statement

The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be an exemplary steward of Island resources through a balance of conservation, education and recreation.

About This Cause

Founded in 1972, the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy (also known as Catalina Island Conservancy) is one of the largest land trusts in California. Catalina Island is located within Los Angeles County and is one of eight California Channel Islands. The Conservancy is responsible for 88% of Catalina Island, including 62 miles of beaches and secluded coves, the longest publicly accessible stretch of undeveloped coastline left in Southern California. Catalina Island is home to 60+ plants and animals found nowhere else in the world, in part to the work of the Conservancy, while maintaining access to explore it lands through public and youth camping, as well as hiking and biking on over 250 miles of roads and trails, and camping at three campsite along the Trans-Catalina Trail and several remote, boat-in campsites. The Conservancy has provided education programs for more than 30 years with a commitment to deliver nature-based engagement and environmental learning. This programming includes STEAM based curriculum to more than 600 K-12 students. More than 70% of the students are underserved and considered socio-economically disadvantaged. Our education objectives are founded in the belief that effective conservation for the 21st Century is by definition a community effort, its aim is four-fold: (i) Educate the public about the uniqueness of the Island's ecosystem; (ii) Provide academic nature-based learning to underserved students promoting matriculation to higher education (iii) Expose students to eco-STEAM based career opportunities on and off the Island; and (ii) Transform those we educate into smarter environmental stewards both on the Island and at home. • Education programs that deliver nature-based engagement and experiential learning including: o Naturalist Training for 1,000+ Island residents and tour operators on the natural and cultural history supporting eco- tourism. o NatureWorks: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) curricula supplemented with experiential environmental education at Avalon school (Long Beach Unified School District), building a higher education track and educated workforce. o Stop the Spread, service-learning invasive plant program with youth camps engages young people in hands-on environmental education/experience. With Conservation being an important priority for the Catalina Island Conservancy. The Conservation program is based upon a branch of science that deals with the protection, restoration, management and sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations. The Conservancy maintains a healthy balance between protecting Catalina's unique environment and serving the needs of a diverse public. While many conservation organizations may exclude people from wild lands as a protection strategy, the Catalina Island Conservancy actively encourages the public to explore, hike, bike and camp in the Island’s beautiful interior. Specific Conservation Programs include: • Catalina Habitat Improvement and Restoration Program (CHIRP), invasive plant removal and habitat restoration. • Native plant conservation, discovering new, endemic plant species and restoring native habitat. Managing a seed bank and database, and native plant nursery. • Wildlife Conservation: endangered species recovery: Catalina Island fox and Bald Eagle; innovative bison management. By promoting public access to the wonders of wild Catalina, the Conservancy generates greater understanding, appreciation and support for its conservation mission.
