Mission Statement

The mission of LVGH is to transform lives through literacy by empowering adults to read, learn, work and grow.

About This Cause

Nationally recognized by the Library of Congress with a Best Practices Literacy Award, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) is known for its student-centered, technology-enriched curriculum that successfully meets the needs of low literate adults. Since its founding in 1972, LVGH's highly trained volunteer tutors have taught more than 20,000 adults from across the region to read, write, speak English, and develop comprehensive literacy skills. Once a small, grassroots volunteer tutoring service, today LVGH teaches over 900 low literate adults annually in its Hartford and East Hartford Literacy Centers. Our broad array of programming meets the unique, diverse educational needs of low literate adults, providing small group instruction in English for Speakers of Other Languages, Basic Literacy, Digital Literacy, Math,Citizenship, and high school completion preparation. Career Pathways provides career counseling, job training and placement. Early Literacy provides childcare enriched with early literacy activities for the children of parents attending classes. Our classes are available both in person and online.
