Mission Statement

We educate and inspire communities to reduce burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma.

About This Cause

Established in 1972, the Burn Institute is dedicated to reducing the number of burn injuries and deaths in San Diego and Imperial Counties through fire and burn prevention education, burn survivor support, and funding burn care research and treatment. With the help of community partners including the UC San Diego Health Regional Burn Center, local fire service agencies, and over 1,000 volunteers, we advocate for community safety and guide burn survivors on their journeys to recovery. Today, the Burn Institute reaches over 100,000 community members and burn survivors each year. The Burn Institute’s goal is a community in which all burn survivors have the resources and support to overcome the devastating psychological and physical effects of their injuries, and community members are educated on how to prevent fires and burns. Our programs fall into two categories: Fire and Burn Prevention and Burn Survivor Support. Our Fire and Burn Prevention programs serve the community at large; however, research has shown that children, seniors, and low-income households are at higher risk therefore additional emphasis is placed on these groups. Our Burn Survivor Support services target individuals of all ages who have suffered a severe burn injury along with their caretakers and families. The Burn Institute is the sole organization in San Diego and Imperial Counties serving and specializing in burn survivor support.
