Mission Statement

The mission of the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law is to protect and advance the rights of adults and children who have mental disabilities. The Center envisions an America where people who have mental illnesses or developmental disabilities exercise their own life choices and have access to the resources that enable them to participate fully in their communities.

About This Cause

Since 1972, the Bazelon Center has been a leader in establishing legal rights and systems changes that have improved the lives of people with disabilities, including the establishment of such basic rights as freedom from abuse and from unnecessary institutional confinement, as well as the right to receive services in community settings. Beyond this, the organization has contributed to the creation and development of a strong disability rights movement and the enactment of the pivotal civil rights covering people with disabilities – the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Our focus has moved far beyond institutional walls and into communities, where the vast majority of people with disabilities live and work. In addition to fighting abuse, institutionalization, and discrimination, the organization works to enable individuals with mental disabilities to live ordinary and productive lives.
