Mission Statement

AT THE CROSSROADS OF CULTURE AND HISTORY TOWN HALL IS A 1,500-SEAT NONPROFIT NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK VENUE IN THE HEART OF NEW YORK CITY. CREATED BY SUFFRAGISTS IN 1921 AND HOME OF COUNTLESS MUSICAL AND CULTURAL MILESTONES.

About This Cause

The Town Hall’s mission is to present quality artistic performances for diverse audiences at affordable prices; to provide educational performances for youth in the theatre and in outreach programs in schools and undeserved communities throughout New York City; and to preserve The Town Hall’s historic and acoustically perfect auditorium for future generations. Since its completion in 1921, The Town Hall has played a central role in the vibrant cultural fabric of New York City. The Town Hall was built by the League for Political Education—a suffragist organization—to serve as an educational meeting place for the discussion of important civic issues. The space was designed by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, to reflect the democratic principles of the League. To this end, box seats were not included in the theatre’s design, and every effort was made to ensure that none of its 1,500 seats had an obstructed view. “The People’s Hall” revealed its extraordinary acoustics in February 1921 and has become well-known for musical, theatrical and dance performances. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Hall has become a symbol of the free exchange of ideas and place where diversity, inclusiveness, and social justice encompass all that we do. To reflect these values, we reach out to schools and community-based organizations to offer arts education and enrichment activities. Since 1998, when our educational outreach programs were founded, The Town Hall has impacted the lives of over one million children throughout New York City.
