Mission Statement

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) empowers people to ride bikes, build connections and transform places. Our vision is a just and sustainable transportation system where biking, walking, and transit are the best ways to get around.

About This Cause

WABA’s programs, from youth and adult education to grassroots community organizing, engage residents in Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Washington, DC. More than five thousand dues-paying members have helped WABA transform bicycling in the region again and again over its almost 50-year history. WABA’s programs support bicyclists of all ages and experience levels and transform our region’s built environment—the human-made space in which people live, work, and play—to make it safer for everyone to get around, whether it's by foot, bike, or car. Education: WABA gets people on bikes by teaching them how to ride! We have taught hundreds of adults how to ride a bike and hundreds more have taken a City Cycling class to understand how the laws work and feel more confident on the road. While the average age of a student in our Learn to Ride classes is 38, WABA also has robust youth education programs, providing youth bicycle safety education and programming in DC public schools, as well as skills challenge courses for community events and summer Bike Camp! for kids aged 8 to 14. Outreach: WABA’s outreach programs are dedicated to getting more people riding bikes for transportation, recreation, and fitness, especially those who are interested but concerned about bicycling. Outreach programs include: Let’s Get Rolling, a resource hub answering questions on topics from fixing flats and the best ways to carry groceries on your bike to riding etiquette and regional laws; the DC Bike Ambassador Program, which distributes resources and information to bicyclists around the city; the Trail Ranger Program, which supports trail maintenance and puts friendly, encouraging, faces out on DC trails; and the Women & Bicycles Program, which connects women who are interested in bicycling to a supportive community space to ask questions, share resources, and explore common experiences. Vision Zero: Alexandria, Arlington, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and Washington, DC have made a commitment to ending traffic fatalities and serious injuries in their jurisdictions. WABA convenes the annual Washington Region Vision Zero Summit, which brings together elected officials, decision-makers, advocates, thought leaders, and the private sector to share best practices, insights and innovations to build a safer, more equitable transportation system that eliminates traffic violence. Capital Trails Coalition: WABA spearheaded the creation of the Capital Trails Coalition in 2015 and leads 72 coalition members in the fight to complete the Capital Trails Network: an 881-mile world-class network of trails distributed equitably throughout our region. When complete, the Capital Trails Network will transform public life by providing healthy, low stress access to open space and reliable transportation for people of all ages and abilities—including those in communities underserved by our current transportation system. Grassroots Organizing: WABA’s grassroots campaigns are the way we win safer streets in our neighborhoods. We train volunteer advocates to lead campaigns for specific safety improvements in their own neighborhoods, empowering them to move the levers of local political power and make a tangible difference to their communities. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism: There is no such thing as a just and sustainable transportation system without equity and antiracism. For WABA’s efforts to be successful, it is critical that we directly address and break down inequities in transportation, including the barriers, discrimination, over-policing and harassment that Black, Indigenous, and people of color who are biking and walking experience. WABA is a founding member and sits on the steering committee of the DC Transportation Equity Network, a group of local organizations for more equitable transportation policies. And though the formation of our Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Antiracism working group, we are continuing to educate WABA board and staff members on how to bring an actively anti-racist lens to everything we do.
