University High School welcomes students of demonstrated motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge. We are a school where adults believe in the promise of every student, and together we work to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.

About This Cause

San Francisco University High School opened in 1975 as a coeducational, college preparatory, independent secondary school. Enrollment stands at approximately 395 students this year. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, UHS is also a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the California Association of Independent Schools, the College Entrance Examination Board, and the Secondary School Admissions Test Board. UHS enrolls a diverse student body from a variety of racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. Most students come from the city of San Francisco and Marin County; some commute from the East Bay and the Peninsula. Students of color make up about 43% of the student body. The school distributes over $2 million in financial aid to 21% of the student body. San Francisco University High School, a college preparatory secondary school, offers an intellectually stimulating, personally enriching and academically challenging program in the liberal arts and sciences to an able and diverse student body. Standards of excellence guide all aspects of our program and the people engaged in it. We seek to instill in students the skills and attitudes of the lifelong learner and the responsible, engaged and, productive citizen. Such skills and attitudes include: Intellectual curiosity Discipline and study skills Capacity for inquiry and analysis Fluency in written and oral communications Ability to formulate problems and solutions, make decisions and follow a plan through to completion Appreciation and respect for diversity and for opposing points of view Concern for others, and respect for teamwork and collaboration Tolerance for ambiguity and a capacity to learn from one's errors An aesthetic sense and participation in creative expression Pursuit of personal health and physical and mental well-being through exercise and athletics Understanding the importance of making choices to achieve balance among one's activities The School is committed to the welfare and development of the total student, to his or her emotional, moral, physical and social, as well as intellectual growth.
