Mission Statement
Christopher House provides a family of schools to help low-income children and their families succeed in school, the workplace, and life. We partner with families to provide a continuum of education for students birth through high-school as well as educational resources to help parents create and foster stable, self-sufficient families.
About This Cause
Christopher House was founded in 1906 during the settlement house movement to support immigrants as they transitioned to life in America. The agency became a leader in piloting innovative programs such as Head Start in the 1960s and teen parent programs in the 1980s. The last ten years have been a time of tremendous growth for Christopher House; with the opening of our James & Jean Stewart Campus in Belmont Cragin in 2013, our Logan Square campus in 2007, and the ongoing operations at our Uptown site, Christopher House has seen a 42% increase in the number of children and adults engaging in our family of schools and supports. Our staff grew from 183 to 240 employees and our annual budget increased from $8 million to $12.7 million. Today, more than 5,700 children and adults engage in Christopher House’s family of schools which provide education and resources to low-income children and their families to succeed in school, the workplace, and life. We partner with families to provide a continuum of education for students birth through high-school as well as tools for parents to create and foster stable, self-sufficient families. Today, the income level into which children are born continues to be a leading predictor of their lifetime success. This unfortunate truth leaves even the brightest poor students struggling to complete college, creating an opportunity gap that impacts our nation’s economic health and productivity. Since 1906, Christopher House has been working to end this gap in opportunity for Chicago’s low-income students. Your support will provide education and resources which include: -Infant and Preschool prepares children, ages six-weeks to five years old, for school, stimulates cognitive growth, and develops emotional intelligence. -Elementary School builds educational continuity from pre-school through elementary school, and empowers achievement and perseverance. -After School drives students, ages six to 18 years old, to develop healthy behaviors, explore new opportunities, achieve academic excellence, and succeed in post-secondary education. -Parent School equips parents with the knowledge, skills, and resources to provide a healthy and nurturing home environment conducive to educational success. Together these schools work to engage students and their parents, offering children high quality education during the school day and educating parents on what they can be doing at home to create supportive, nurturing environments. Using research and best practice strategies and collaboration with peer organizations, Christopher House has developed indicators for each of its schools to track success. These indicators include: -95% of infants and toddlers and 70% of preschool children will show a step increase in language development as evidenced in the Teaching Strategies GOLD Individual Child Profile. -85% of elementary school students grow three steps on the University of Chicago STEP literacy assessment. -75% of parents will reach two out of three goals set in the fall by the end of the year.
