Mission Statement
“Yucaipa Valley Animal Placement Society is a no kill, non-profit animal shelter that strives to prevent euthanasia of dogs and cats in shelters throughout the region by providing them a temporary safe haven until a permanent loving home can be found.”
About This Cause
Yucaipa Animal Placement Society (YAPS) was born when one woman decided to rescue an abandoned dog in rural Yucaipa and resolved to make a difference in that dog’s life. In 1957, Betty Martines started taking in discarded and neglected pets and housed them in her shed on California Street. Without realizing it, she would become a rescue pioneer. 60 years later, YAPS has grown to help cats and dogs across Southern California. The YAPS kennels were built in 1983 and since that time a cage free cattery, a canine holding area and play yards have been added to the grounds. YAPS is proud to have remained a no-kill facility providing safe sanctuary to dogs and cats of all shapes, sizes, and ages. We may not know the entire story of every pet that comes to us, but like Betty, we try to know them as they are now, and we show them all the kindness and dignity they deserve. Each week, YAPS takes in pets from both municipal shelters and from owners that can no longer provide care. We think Betty would be proud of what her legacy has become, just as we are honored to continue carrying it out. In 2018, the new cage-free cattery complete with enclosed "catios" opened. Now, YAPS can save triple the number of felines than in years past. For the past 3 consecutive years, YAPS has placed over 300 dogs and cats annually. Many of which were rescued from high kill shelters and homes that could no longer provide care for them. In addition to adoption services we offer low cost dog training with scholarship options for families in need, a pet food pantry, and low cost spay and neuter vouchers for Yucaipa residents.
