Mission Statement
Re-imagining a world without rape - powering a culture of consent. The DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC) is dedicated to creating a world free of sexual violence through conscience and action. Our call to action obliges us to facilitate systemic change by equipping diverse stakeholders to respond to survivors of sexual assault with compassion, dignity and respect, regardless of race, class, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability, age or religious affiliation.
About This Cause
For 52 years, as the oldest rape crisis center in the country, and the only one in Washington, DC the DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC) has been a beacon of hope for survivors of sexual assault . The work of the center is sacred, unscripted and bear's witness to the unimaginable. This was especially evident during the COVID pandemic, in which the center saw a 50% increase in request for services through its 24/7 crisis intervention hotline, individual and group counseling services, as well as its crisis response team. Additionally, in order to meet the growing needs of survivors of sexual assault, the center expanded its programming to include 24/7 hospital advocacy, and community based advocacy. Since October 4, 2021, the center has served 95 survivors of sexual assault, who have requested advocacy support in the hospital and/or in the community. As the center prepares for its 50th anniversary this year, the new advocacy services that the center is providing helps to build out the capacity of Washington, DC to respond to survivors of sexual assault with dignity and compassion. What we know for sure is that sexual assault is on the rise in Washington, DC and survivors of sexual assault are requesting services now more than ever. We're asking you to join in our efforts. Will you take a moment to invest in our work? Let me tell you a story about a brave survivor named Jackie. Jackie came to the DC Rape Crisis Center after being sexually assaulted in her home. One of the advocates at the center met Jackie at the hospital at 3am after she called the 24/7 hotline, and stayed with her while she underwent a five hour forensic rape exam. While the exam was very challenging, Jackie told the advocate "Thank you for supporting me in my darkest hour, if you were not here I would be completely alone.'' After the exam, the advocate provided Jackie with clothes, and emergency housing, as she did not feel safe going back home. It does not matter if the phone rings at 3am or 3pm, what we want survivors of sexual assault to know is that they are never alone. I've been at the DC Rape Crisis Center for thirteen years. Its stories like these that remind me that there is no higher honor for me than being in service to survivors of sexual assault. When we support survivors of sexual assault on their path to healing, we help them reclaim their power. With your investment in our work, we can support more brave survivors of sexual assault, like Jackie, to get access to 24/7 services from the DC Rape Crisis Center. Will you join us in making sure survivors of sexual assault are never alone? When you invest in our work by making a donation to the DC Rape Crisis Center, you're planting a seed of hope. Our services are critical, and have been a bridge to healing for the last 50 years. Will you stand with us so we can stand with survivors of sexual assault?
