Mission Statement
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region (RMHC Philly) supports families of seriously ill children by creating a community of comfort and hope. Our programs include two Ronald McDonald Houses, three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at local hospitals, Ronald McDonald Camp, and a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile operated in partnership with St. Christopher's Foundation For Children.
About This Cause
Founded in 1974 as the first Ronald McDonald House in the world, today we are the model for more than 360 Houses around the globe. The Chestnut Street House is located in a historic mansion which was expanded in 1995 and once again is undergoing an expansion in 2019 with the addition of the Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower, more than doubling its capacity. Upon completion, this House will accommodate 127 families each night. Our second House opened in 2008 at the corner of Front Street and Erie Avenue and accommodates 20 families each night. Beyond the walls of our Houses, we serve children and families through other core programs. Our two Houses, located in North and West Philadelphia, are conveniently located near several pediatric hospitals including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. These Houses provide temporary lodging for families along with daily meals, transportation, family activities, and psycho-social support from a team of social workers. No one is ever turned away due to inability to pay the suggested $15 per night fee and the House waives approximately half the nightly fees annually. Our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, two at CHOP and one at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, extend the support of our Houses into the hospital by offering a quiet, comfortable respite place for caregivers to rest and regroup during their children’s treatment—helping them to reduce stress and focus on their own health and well-being while they take care of their children. These welcoming hospitality lounges are designed to help parent and guardians forget they are in a hospital setting, even though they are just steps from their children’s beds. These Family Rooms are available for all families with a child being treated in the hospital unit, regardless of whether they live outside the 25 mile radius included as criteria to stay at the Houses. Ronald McDonald Camp began in 1986 and continues each August when over two hundred campers pack their bags and go to the Pocono Mountains, a few hours north of Philadelphia. Ronald McDonald Camp offers a week-long overnight camp experience for children with cancer and their siblings under the care of volunteer counselors and a team of doctors and nurses from CHOP. At Camp, these children participate in all traditional camp activities regardless of any limitations they may have related to their diagnosis or oncology treatment. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, operated in partnership with St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children, provides free, quality dental care and treatment to uninsured or underinsured children ages 6 months to 14 years old throughout North Philadelphia. The mobile dental program visits schools, early learning centers and neighborhoods providing each child with diagnostic, preventive and restorative dental care that includes examinations, cleanings, fluoride and sealant placement, X-rays, fillings, extractions and other restorative treatments.
