Mission Statement
Founded in 1972, the Chinese Progressive Association educates, organizes and empowers the low income and working class immigrant Chinese community in San Francisco to build collective power with other oppressed communities to demand better living and working conditions and justice for all people.
About This Cause
CPA works to develop the leadership of Chinese immigrant adults and youth. CPA's core programs include the Tenant Workers Center, Youth MOJO, Political Empowerment Campaign, and Seeding Change. Through our work, CPA has improved the lives and working conditions of immigrants and low-income families in San Francisco. Our accomplishments include: helping over 200 restaurant workers recover nearly $4 million dollars that were owed to them by their employer. In 2010, CPA published the "Check Please" report which found that: 1 out of 2 workers (50%) receive less than minimum wage 1 out of 5 workers (20%) work more than 60 hours a week Nearly half (48%) of workers have experienced burn injury Only 3% of workers have employer provided health care 95% do not receive a living wage CPA has continued to work to educate community members about their legal labor rights and support workers in filing claims with labor agencies to recover their wages. In 2010, CPA also helped pass San Francisco's Health Care Services Master Plan Ordinance which requires the city to create a plan for the development of the city's health care services to ensure that the health care needs of San Franciscan residents, particularly low-income and immigrant residents, are met. Through Youth MOJO, CPA develops the leadership of Chinese American youth in San Francisco. Youth MOJO leaders develop leaderships skills, including public speaking, facilitation, and outreach. Through Youth MOJO, youth leaders engage in the community.
