Mission Statement

At Discovery School, our Mission is to Inspire and Nurture the Love of Learning in young children and their families.

About This Cause

Discovery School is celebrating 50 years of discovering the JOY of learning! At Discovery School We Learn as we Play, and Play as we Learn. For 50 years, Discovery School has nurtured the LOVE of Learning through a play-based, child centered and developmentally appropriate Early Childhood program for young children and their families. Discovery School of San Antonio, Inc. is a non-profit, multi-denominational, private school for children ages two years through First Grade. First incorporated in 1974, Discovery School is proud to also have been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1989. NAEYC Accreditation is the mark of the highest quality in early childhood programs. By keeping tuition low and offering financial assistance to qualified families, Discovery School maintains a culturally and economically diverse student body as well as access to a high-quality preschool experience for a broad socio-economic base. (15-20% of our families receive financial assistance). At Discovery School, we believe that in order to develop to their full potential, children should be active, engaged learners. To facilitate each child's cognitive, emotional, physical, and social growth, Discovery School is committed to providing an age appropriate, hands-on, enriched curriculum. Children are encouraged to be curious, to wonder and to seek answers to questions. Special attention is given to the foundational skills critical to future success in school. Children have opportunities to initiate activities, make decisions, explore their world, make new discoveries, manipulate materials, experience success, and take pride in their accomplishments. Teachers promote positive feelings about one another, each child’s unique strengths, and the value of their work. In addition to cognitive and creative growth, Discovery School is also determined to provide learning experiences which celebrate our immediate culture, the diversity within our world, while valuing one’s own rights and the rights of others. Close interaction between family and school is an essential part of the educational process, and our program is designed to provide children and their family’s experiences in which to grow together. Most of all, the children of Discovery School know they are loved and accepted, think of themselves as capable, engaged learners, and consider learning fun. By providing an enriched, nurturing learning environment, Discovery School strives to inspire a life-time love of learning. Led by highly qualified early childhood professionals, children explore literacy, math, and science concepts through hands-on, meaningful activities that stimulate their curiosity and extend their understanding. Center-based learning can both support and challenge individual children. They develop large and fine motor skills as they cook, plant gardens, care for animals, explore various art media, construct and inspect. Language and literacy skills flourish as children are surrounded by words, print, and the wonder of their limitless imaginations. Children attend Motor Skills, Music, Spanish and Science Lab classes each week. Unit studies often culminate with a related field trip to a museum, cultural event, local point of interest or community venue. The Home to School connection is highly valued, and families are seen as partners in learning. Discovery School's Parent Club encourages parents to be involved in their child's classroom and in school events, while building a campus culture of cooperation and collaboration for our children. Discovery School is parent owned and governed by our volunteer Board of Directors. Parents are encouraged to be as involved as they are able - by serving on our Parent Board, supporting our fundraising efforts, becoming a Room Parent, assisting with school-wide activities, or sharing their talents and skills. Successful fundraising efforts and community support are critical components in bridging the gap between tuition and fees, and the true cost of quality. Fundraising activities (Children's Fall Carnival, Spring Benefit, and our Annual Sunshine Fund Drive) augment our income revenue and give our families an opportunity to participate in activities that directly benefit our children - while being great fun! Additionally, in-kind and monetary donations coupled with community-based grants allow us to provide the best possible preschool environment for our children. At Discovery School, we are honored to hold the future in our laps. By providing a child-centered, play based, developmentally appropriate curriculum that is rooted in proven research, we believe that children will Learn as they Play, and Play as they Learn! Come Discover the Joy of Learning with us!
