Mission Statement
Peace Neighborhood Center’s mission is to provide programs for children, families, and individuals who are affected by social and economic problems. Peace helps people discover options, enhance skills, and make choices that lead to self-sufficiency and positive community involvement. Since 1971, we have helped more than 15,000 people in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County through a wide range of comprehensive programs designed to promote education, health, well-being and fiscal independence.
About This Cause
Peace Neighborhood Center is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping those in need in Washtenaw County. Founded in 1971, Peace began as a neutral meeting place for neighbors from diverse backgrounds to resolve their mutual problems. Since then, Peace has grown into a multi-service agency with programs that assist children, adults, and families from low-income backgrounds with challenges they regularly face. Our Youth Services include after-school programs designed to improve academic performance and set children down the path to higher education, a career, and ultimately self-sufficiency. We assist adults with substance abuse recovery and prevention, advocacy, emergency assistance, counseling, and job training. Peace Neighborhood Center’s Youth Services help young people affected by lower economic and social standing to discover options and make choices that lead them to self-sufficiency and greater social involvement. The various programs that comprise Peace Neighborhood Center Youth Services are all aimed at making this goal a reality. These programs include the REACH After-School Program, Alternatives For Youth, College/Career Prep Club, Rising Sons Mentorship for Boys, STARS Mentorship for Girls, the Family Enrichment Program and one of the area’s most affordable Summer Day Camp programs. It can be demonstrated that a stable after-school environment can have a dramatic effect on academic performance and social behavior. With the right guidance, the youth enrolled in the program will be far more likely to make better choices. Furthermore, by introducing these concepts at a young age, it is proven that the program participants will embrace them throughout their lifetime as they become brighter, more accomplished adults. Peace Neighborhood Center’s strength lies in its unique family-oriented atmosphere. Young people who become involved in Youth Services become members of what is known as the “Peace Family”. Staff members act as role-models and mentors and interact with the families of each participant in order to provide the best possible service to each child. As the child grows and ages out of one program, they progress into another program specifically designed for their age group. Furthermore, there is a certain cohesiveness and stability in having these programs housed under the same roof under the watchful eye of staff members that sets Peace Neighborhood Center apart from other programs that offer similar services. It is possible for a five-year-old child to become enrolled in the REACH After School Program and, as they age, move into Alternatives for Youth for middle school children prior to moving on to the College/Career Prep Club for high school kids and young adults. That allows Peace Neighborhood Center to play the role of a stable environment in a child’s life for a period of up to fifteen years. For many of the youth that we serve, that steadying presence over their formative years is the most stable thing in their lives. Because of this family atmosphere, Peace Neighborhood Center Youth Services is extremely effective in helping these youth find their path to success and breaking the cycle of poverty.
