About This Cause
Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) is a nonprofit neighborhood revitalization organization committed to strengthening neighborhoods throughout Chicago and South Suburban Cook County through homeownership. Also affiliated are Neighborhood Lending Services (NLS), one of Illinois’ largest nonprofit single family (1-4 unit) home lenders and NHS Redevelopment Corporation (NHSRC) that focuses on the stabilizing troubled properties, rehabbing older homes, and building new affordable housing. Since its founding in 1975, NHS has supported people throughout the City of Chicago and the South Suburbs along every step of the way as they work to buy, fix, or keep their homes. NHS has worked tirelessly to break down barriers and create opportunities for Chicagoland residents to become homeowners and maintain their homes. For far too many, the goal of homeownership seemed out of reach. Over the years, though, NHS has connected home seekers with more than $675 million in mortgage lending. The agency has created over 6,440 homeowners, saved more than 10,700 homes from foreclosure, and has helped over 245,000 individuals and families navigate the path to home purchase and home preservation. Today, NHS is responding to a convergence of crises. Black and Brown families still face systemic barriers to homeownership that make it harder to build generational wealth. Racial disparities in mortgage lending, a lack of housing inventory, and decades of disinvestment have increased economic uncertainty for our clients as they recover from the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. NHS is committed to addressing these systemic issues by removing barriers to homeownership for BIPOC borrowers, adding to the inventory of affordable homes in Chicagoland, preventing foreclosure for current homeowners, and advancing our strategic neighborhood partnerships to meet on-the-ground community needs. Through community building, homeownership education, advocacy, redevelopment, and mortgage lending, NHS is helping families put down roots, such that distressed and underserved neighborhoods can flourish and communities thrive.
