Mission Statement
Tree House is a humane organization that promotes the inherent value of every animal and strives to educate the public about proper and responsible animal care, with a focus on the care and placement of stray cats with special physical and emotional needs. We are committed to finding every healthy and treatable animal a home.
About This Cause
Tree House was founded in 1971 and since that time we have expanded and enhanced our programs and services to become the largest, cageless shelter for sick, injured, abused and neglected cats in the Chicagoland area. To date we have found homes for more than 25,000 cats and performed nearly 30,000 spay/neuter surgeries. In addition to our focus on the rehabilitation and adoption of stray cats, we offer many other valuable programs and services, including our Free Spay/Neuter Program, Pet Loss Grief Support Group, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), Community Cats, CAW (Cats at Work), Adult & Youth Volunteer Program, Animal-Assisted Therapy, Behavior Hotline, Pet Food Pantry, and Education Outreach Program. Animal rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption will always be crucial aspects of our focus, but what makes Tree House unique is that we are far more than just a shelter. In addition to helping animals through our rescue and adoption programs, our Low-cost Veterinary Clinic will provide a much-needed service to thousands of pet guardians and animals. Equally as important are the programs dedicated to helping guardians keep their pets – particularly in times of hardship – and educating the public about responsible care of pets and free-roaming animals. Millions of companion animals needlessly die each year because there are not enough programs and services in place to help them. Thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous donor, we received a land donation at 7225 N. Western Avenue in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, and we have been working with donors, volunteers, and community leaders, and in June of 2015, we broke ground on the construction of this new, state-of-the-art facility including Chicago's first Cat Cafe. In 2017 we finished the building and had our Grand Opening on 7/29/2017. Our new building will not only offer a more enriching environment for our residents, but it will also feature state-of-the-art equipment, and clean, comfortable isolation wards with ease of sanitation, which will decrease the spread of disease and quarantine time for each animal. In addition, the modern, airy and light-filled design will be welcoming for visitors and potential adopters. This means we will be able to rescue and adopt our cats at a faster rate, thus greatly increasing the number of animals we save every year. We view our new facility as a community center with a focus on animal welfare, and a goal of bringing education, volunteers, and services together under one roof to help improve the surrounding community as well as greater Chicagoland and beyond. While our focus will remain on rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured, and abandoned stray cats, educating the public about responsible cat and dog care and behavior as well as providing guidance and direct support to community cat caretakers; this progressive facility will take Tree House to new heights. Some of the features to be included: • Chicago's first Cat Cafe • Public Veterinary Clinic treating cats and dogs, providing many of the same services of a private veterinary practice. (Phase two of building. Estimated to open in 2019.) • Education Center/Training Area will feature training sessions on cat and kitten care and behavior, training and certification classes for dogs, and informational seminars on Pet Trusts, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). • Pet Food Pantry & Supply Store supporting the nutritional needs of the pets of low-income families and feral cat colony caretakers, subsidized by the sale of pet food and merchandise to adopters and the general public. • Unique and Enriching Adoption Rooms showcasing Tree House residents, with sun-drenched outdoor enclosures, lots of vertical space to explore, and an abundance of natural light. Thank you so much for your support!
