Mission Statement
MYS educates, develops, and promotes young musicians. We provide a strong artistic program in a supportive environment which focuses on creativity and music education, develops leadership skills, celebrates community, and is accessible all interested youth, no matter their socioeconomic background.
About This Cause
Incorporated in 1975, MYS enrolls 400 students from 11 counties in the greater Portland Metro area and SW Washington in 15 beginning to advanced orchestra, wind, jazz, flute, and percussion ensembles. MYS is one of the largest youth music organizations in the country and one of the few offering a jazz program. MYS provides high-quality music education driven by our belief that it will last a lifetime, building character, relationships, and leaders. Our Music Access and Equity Program includes: -15 in-school concerts each season reaching over 5,000 low-income youth -Tuition-free Beginning Strings Program and free instruments for low-income students at four locations in Portland and Hillsboro -Tuition assistance for all qualifying students and an instrument loaner program -Group coaching program that last season saw 170 sessions, key for students who cannot afford private instruction -Private Lesson Clearing House to subsidize private lessons for promising students who would not otherwise have access to private instruction Our tuition-free Beginning Strings Program gives elementary students new to music the opportunity to learn a string instrument. This program has now expanded to 3 locations, 3 in Portland and one in Hillsboro, offering classes in violin, viola, and cello instruction. Students meet once a week in a group class and each student also recieves a weekly individual private lesson which is critical to their growth and development. Our Hillsboro ensemble program has expanded to offer 3 string ensembles, beginning to high intermediate, to serve students in the west end of the metropolitan area.
