Mission Statement

The Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation (BGC) exists to improve the quality of life for all in Garfield and its surrounding neighborhoods through active community engagement.

About This Cause

In January of 1976, the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation (BGC) of Pittsburgh embarked on its mission to improve the livelihoods of all residents of the Bloomfield and Garfield neighborhoods through volunteer powered advocacy and revitalization. The effects from the economic decline of Pittsburgh’s manufacturing industry compacted various failed urban renewal programs in the city’s East End neighborhoods. Garfield, in particular, is continuing to fight urban blight that has infected the area. The BGC and our community partners have fought to keep affordable housing in the “most livable city”. The BGC believes that Pittsburgh should be a livable city for all. The Garfield Glen Housing plan provides affordable rental homes and future opportunities for homeownership. By providing below-market rate apartments, we increase our residents’ economic and community power. Sustainable communities are neighborhoods where we empower individuals and promote an economic positive feedback loop for everyone in the area. The BGC has partnered with the Neighborhood Learning Alliance to provide Pittsburgh area students access to SAT prep courses. In 2015, one hundred students participated in these classes. The BGC provides Garfield students the opportunity to engage in their community through afterschool programs. Our afterschool programs and summer camps enable students to not only socialize, but also allot time in their day to finish homework and seek help if necessary. The BGC sponsors summer internship opportunities for teens in the neighborhood. We encourage local businesses to train and employ high school students while the BGC pays their wages. This is an opportunity for the area’s teenagers to start building a resume while they engage in their community. In partnership with the Neighborhood Learning Alliance, the BGC provides residents access to a computer lab and employment opportunities. During tax season, the BGC provides tax preparation help for low-income residents. The BGC publishes The Bulletin, a free monthly newsletter for all area residents. The Bulletin provides our neighbors with access to information regarding upcoming events, news, job opportunities, and area projects. The BGC takes a wholistic approach to neighborhood revitalization. No one aspect of a neighborhood is the holy grail of improving community members’ livelihoods. The BGC listens to the needs of our neighbors in order to promote inclusive sustainable community growth that withstands generations.
