Mission Statement

Verland is one of our region’s largest providers of services for people with severe disabilities. All proceeds from our events are used for housing, rehabilitation, health services, and medical care for Verland’s clients, who comprise the most vulnerable and affected population in our region. These events help to provide the vital support needed to enable Verland to fulfill its mission to "Establish, support, operate, and sustain the best possible programs for the holistic well-being of the individuals whom it serves, enabling them to live fulfilling lives in safe, home-like settings with full personal dignity."

About This Cause

Verland was founded in 1978 by three women who each loved a child (Verlinda, Andrew, and David) with profound disabilities who became the focus of their lives. The co-founders shared a deep desire to permanently alter society's perception of and response to individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities over their lifespans. Verland's philosophy departed from the practices of the time, espousing the highest quality services, diversity of supports, and a home-like environment that were unmatched. Today, Verland maintains the highest support standards and solid reputation within the field, as proven with many near-perfect state inspection surveys and positive acknowledgements from other providers. The philosophy of Verland has remained unchanged as Verland has expanded over the last 40 years. Verland's operating budget has grown from $2 million in 1981 to a current budget of over $32 million. The number of staff increased from 112 to 550, and the number of clients served from 76 to 249. Additionally, Verland expanded from its 10 home campus in Sewickley and 2 community-based group homes to a total of 52 homes and several support facilities (including an equestrian program) in Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, and Mercer counties within Southwest Pennsylvania. Despite these accomplishments, challenges continue to stress Verland's ability to meet all the needs of the individuals it serves. These challenges include a greatly increased demand for services, those that are served are aging and experiencing increased health problems, rising operational costs, significant state funding cuts in the disabilities field of service, and facility and equipment upgrades needed to meet these needs. Verland also has significant economic impact on local communities and the region, adding to its workforce and tax base. Supporting Verland has a direct impact on the communities in which it operates homes and facilities. From Our Website: www.verland.org We are a non-profit family of person-centered, community homes and services supporting over 200 individuals with intellectual disabilities, many of whom have multiple physical challenges. Verland's main campus has ten larger, family-centered homes, which complement community placement with a complete continuum of options for those needing more support, and includes cutting-edge facilities that provide medical, dental, educational, recreational and therapeutic services. Our professionally trained staff is dedicated to the complex needs of our individuals, and provide a full continuum of treatment and services for a lifetime where the individuals are primary in an elegant, dignified, state-of-the-heart lifestyle.
