Mission Statement
The Wilkins School Community Center (WSCC) provides a center for community activity and civic pride through the promotion of educational, recreational, and cultural programs. Our tagline is “Meet Play Learn & Grow!”. This initiative brings together hard-working and reliable volunteers that help serve the Greater Pittsburgh Area through affordable programs offered by our community partners. For over 35 years, The Wilkins School Community Center has thrived as a nonprofit organization in the heart of Regent Square; bringing together the community of Swissvale and the Greater Pittsburgh Area through hosting classes, events and community meetings. Our facility welcomes over 50,000 residents from the City of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas each year, playing a vital role in the growth and well-being of our collective Pittsburgh community. The WSCC became a 40 years old 501c3 in 2019!
About This Cause
Wilkins School Community Center (WSCC) The place to meet play learn & grow The WSCC is a 501c3 that formed in 1979 when neighbors requested the use of the former Wilkins School building as a community center. The building's use as a school had ended with the merger of several local districts into what is now the Woodland Hills School District. Neighbors wanted the sense of community that the school had created to continue and it has throughout the years. In fact the community geographically expanded to include people from all over greater Pittsburgh. Today the WSCC provides meeting space for local community, social service and culture organizations; Regent Square Civic Association, Run Around the Square, Swissvale Tree Committee, Osher Life Long Learning classes, CCAC Exceptional Adult Socials, Organization of Chinese Americans, and several weekly AA meetings. In addition, we offer free educational and personal improvement lectures and workshops. Our center offers a wide array of classes that are open to the public; health and wellness programs, (yoga, Pilates, tai chi), early childhood development programs, language classes including American Sign Language, visual and theater arts for all ages, diverse dance classes, (ballet, tap, jazz, salsa, tango, waltz, urban ballroom, Chicago Steppin’), and music lessons. We offer community rentals for private events at a reasonable cost. We host many public events throughout the year, most of which are free. This years highlights include a Fall Open House with free classes, a Community Organization Fair with 30 non-profits participating, three free international harpist concerts, and the annual Books Beer, Plans and Dogs Sale. In addition the WSCC serves as an incubator by renting space to small businesses. Since 1979, WSCC has been financially self-sustaining through programming, rentals membership drives, donations and fundraisers. The membership/donor base has increased from 60 to 234 and there are approximately 1,234 subscribers to our email list. The operating budget has risen from $109,000 to $154,000. Currently, Swissvale Borough owns the building, and the WSCC leases it. This arrangement can only continue as long as the building is used as a community center. The WSCC is responsible for all operational costs of the center, maintenance of the building and grounds, events and programming. Our building is not ADA compliant and our goal is to make enhancements to the building so that everyone can meet, play, learn and grow at the WSCC. It is a big project and we are determined to get this done.
