About This Cause
In 1982, founder Samuel A. Costanzo opened the first school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the request of juvenile court judges who were seeking a healthy alternative to the institutionalization of Allegheny County juvenile offenders. The Academy Schools has never forgotten their core mission of combining rigorous educational curricula with extensive clinical treatment, counseling services, trade skills training & certification, and athletics. We seek to capture our students in their finest moments, emphasizing their successes and never letting them revert to anything less than their best. Part of The Academy Schools, New Outlook Academy opened its doors in 1997. New Outlook Academy is a private, residential school designed with a holistic, evidence-based and trauma-informed approach to help at-risk adolescents referred by probation officers and Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF). New Outlook Academy conducts tours with probation officers and CYF workers on a regular basis to ensure we foster and maintain connections with all counties across Pennsylvania, with the exception of Philadelphia. Referrals for students can come from all over Pennsylvania, as well as Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, Michigan, Delaware, Texas, and Washington, D.C. New Outlook Academy is located in the southern part of the city of Pittsburgh, bordering where Baldwin Borough meets the city limits. Located on 44 acres, the school is home to a 53-bed general residential and Family First Specialized Settings Program (EMPOWER), as well as a 54-bed, non-hospital, inpatient drug and alcohol program. The school provides a comprehensive and safe rehabilitative residential setting for young women, ages 13-17, in grades 7-12. More than just a school, New Outlook Academy is a stable home for the young women in our programs, many of whom lack dependable support systems and are in need of protection from abuse, neglect, and violence. New Outlook Academy provides a safe place for the ladies to work through their past traumas and destructive behaviors in order to discover their true self and work towards their academic and personal goals. The school interweaves academics, clinical treatment, vocational training, counseling, and extra-curricular activities to provide a holistic approach to healing from the adversity that brought them to our doorstep.
