Mission Statement
A Glimmer of Hope the Symbol of the Cure is a Pittsburgh Based breast cancer foundation setting protocol for women under 40 along with funding research for metastatic breast cancer
About This Cause
A Glimmer of Hope Foundation is a Pittsburgh based, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young women dealing with breast cancer. It was founded in 1994 by Diana Napper to honor the wishes of her best friend, Carol Jo Weiss Friedman, who lost her battle to this disease in 1990. Fulfilling her friend’s dream of becoming a jewelry designer, Diana opened a jewelry business to fund a hospice in Carol Jo’s name. She designed a pin with a hanging Swarovski teardrop crystal to symbolize the pain and emotion that is endured with a breast cancer diagnosis. A pearl at the top of the pin represents the hope for a cure. Diana sold the pins and donated the proceeds to breast cancer research. As the dream evolved, Diana realized her mission was far greater. Her desire was to create a venue to support young breast cancer patients and their loved ones. With that as her goal, A Glimmer of Hope was born. Although astonishing progress has been made towards eradicating breast cancer—there is still much work to be done. By donating to A Glimmer of Hope, you are supporting our steadfast dedication to fighting breast cancer. Every dollar raised provides funding for raising awareness, advancing life-changing research, educating the public, and increasing screenings and treatments. One example of the significance of your financial support is the Integrated Breast Oncology Pilot for Pre-Menopausal Women, based at Allegheny Health Network’s Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion. Funded through a grant by A Glimmer of Hope, this program is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for younger breast cancer patients and minimizing any stressors that may complicate their treatment and hinder recovery. Key components include: one-stop shopping for medical services, coordinated treatment with integrated services to minimize symptoms and side effects, and decreased barriers to treatment. A multidisciplinary team will prepare a plan of care throughout each woman’s diagnosis and treatment. The center also offers nutritional counseling, acupuncture and massage therapy sessions. To open more centers like this, we need your help. Your gift, in any amount, will help us further our efforts to enhance young women’s care and offer the most innovative and individualized programs available. Today, the foundation is leading the battle against breast cancer through funding, cutting-edge cancer treatment programs, and most importantly, financing studies in premenopausal breast cancer.
