Mission Statement

MACAC provides an array of programs and services available to the community and promotes collaborative efforts with entities that are vital to the community. Our vision is to strengthen fundamental family values to keep them functioning in a healthy and empowered manner. We believe that by removing the traditional barriers, families and ultimately communities will be strengthened. The specific mission of MACAC is to improve the quality of life of families throughout the East End and Greater Pittsburgh Communities by: Empowering individuals and families to become productively independent; Foster conditions that assure economic stability of individuals and families; Provide programs that support and encourage functional family values.

About This Cause

In 1990, The Mount Ararat Community Activity Center, Inc. (MACAC) was formally established as a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt organization. MACAC is dedicated to helping East End individuals and families through outreach and has a governing board which includes an executive director, with a balanced representation of service, community and church interests. MACAC focuses on the family as a comprehensive unit and has an ideology that this can promote fundamental change in the conditions that limit the quality of life for those we serve. MACAC focuses on prevention and intervention with problematic issues, primarily through its outreach to underserved youth as means of breaking the cycle of disadvantage. MACAC has a large number of programs and services available to the community and promotes collaborative efforts with entities that are vital to the community. Program areas include: • After-School Program provides a safe and nurturing environment, while offering tutoring and homework assistance in math, reading, science, and other academic areas. Students also receive computer education and recreational activities. The goal is to teach students to strive to high academic achievement, develop cultural awareness, as well as personal and social skills. • Be A Middle School Mentor Program is offered in collaboration with the United Way of Southwestern PA and is designed to match successful adult mentors with middle school students to learn about real careers and jobs, to develop big dreams for their future, to understand the importance of doing well in school, and to have another caring adult role model. The program is operated in Obama, Colfax, and Sterrett schools. • Computer Technology Center offers program participants as well as members of the community an opportunity to have free access to computers with internet access for personal use. Computer classes are offered to teach basic computer skills in addition to advanced instruction on various computer programs. • Early Childhood Development Center offers a comprehensive educational program that focuses on the cognitive, emotional, and physical development of children from infancy to five years of age. A safe, nurturing and stimulating day care environment is designed to ensure children are healthy and happy. • Food and Clothing banks are offered to families in need. • Mentoring Project is in collaboration with several East End Pittsburgh Public Middle Schools and is designed to assist students enhance academic achievement, improve social skills, increase class attendance, and reduce the dropout rate. • Seniors Program offers educational, recreational, and social opportunities through academic, health & literacy activities, including, computer, quilting, and craft classes. • “Camp Harambee” Youth Summer Day Camp provides educational, cultural, recreational, and creative activities for youth ages 5-14. The goal of summer camp is to encourage family bonding, improve literacy, and expose campers to service learning. * MACAC programs and services are available to participants regardless of race, color, religious creed, disability, ancestry, national origin, age, or sex.
