Mission Statement

The Neighborhood Academy is a faith-based, college preparatory independent school whose mission is to break the generational cycle of poverty by preparing low-income youth for college and citizenship. Our school is dedicated to developing the minds, bodies, and spirits of students so that they become fully productive members of society. By doing so, students will break the cycle of generational poverty that has held them captive and deprived society of the full value of their lives.

About This Cause

Our school is rooted in the idea that if young people are immersed year-round in a holistic, nurturing environment, they will recognize the value of their education and the steps they must take to fulfill their potential. By addressing the issues inherent to poverty, our students develop physically, intellectually, and emotionally, and are prepared for a life beyond poverty. This educational model is realized by holding school 12 hours a day, 11 months of the year, with programming that includes: • A college-preparatory curriculum focusing on reading, writing, mathematics, and science, with an emphasis on critical thinking and ethical reflection; • Small class sizes, with a 10:1 or smaller student-to-teacher ratio; • A mandatory six-week summer school to retain and advance critical knowledge; • Three meals and two snacks each day; • Transportation to and from school via public transit and chartered vans; • Individual and group counseling; • Career development and financial literacy programs; • SAT preparation and intensive guidance throughout the college application process; • Assistance with emergency needs such as medical care; and • Continued support for alumni throughout their college years and beyond. The ills of poverty are not specific to any one location; the needs and struggles our students face follow them from home, to school, and back again. Thus it is important not only to provide quality educational opportunities, but to remove the roadblocks that prevent them from using education as a vehicle for upward mobility.
