Mission Statement
Friends of Ramana’s Garden, Inc. is a Maryland corporation that is approved by the IRS to operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity. Friends of Ramana's Garden was established in 2005 to support Ramana’s Garden India, a wonderful and loving children’s home and school near the renowned spiritual center of Rishikesh in northern India. Ramana's Garden India focuses particularly on the education and empowerment of girls and women in a co-ed environment where boys and men are likewise taught to respect women and girls. Friends is an all-volunteer organisation in the United States. We have no office overhead or payroll. Since 2005, annual expenses have been less than three percent of donations, and limited to unavoidable expenses for items such as accounting, tax preparation, insurance, and regulatory fees that are required to operate as a charity. Our mission as Friends is to support abandoned, destitute, and abused children who at Ramana's Garden India are given food, shelter, education, medical care, and all necessities so they may thrive in a world that had seemed almost hopeless. The children accepted to live at Ramana’s Garden India once were at risk of hunger, death, abuse, torture, or being sold into prostitution or child labor. Ramana's Garden has approximately 50 children living on site and attending school, plus another 150 local village children who attend school during the day and receive a healthy hot lunch. The school sets a high standard in the local community with rigorous and effective education for grades one through eight, as well as pre-K and Kindergarten. Ramana's Garden grows much of its own food with an organic vegetable garden that supplies healthy and nutritious food to all the kids and staff. The resident kids and staff also learn to form a community with much love, nurturing, laughter, and joy, and they enjoy group musical or arts activities after a healthy dinner each night.
