Mission Statement
The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra is one of the city's cultural treasures. Founded in 1945, it cultivates in its members discipline, fine musicianship and an overall appreciation for excellence. PYSO members bring a sense of amazement and excitement about classical music to diverse audiences-young and old, novice and seasoned. Through their impressive performances, dedication and commitment they also serve as role-models for aspiring younger musicians and students; and, through their demanding tours in the U.S. and internationally, they have become outstanding cultural ambassadors of the Pittsburgh Region, Pennsylvania, and the United States.
About This Cause
The Orchestra is comprised of over 90 students from approximately 40 public schools, charter schools, private schools, universities and colleges in the western Pennsylvania area, as well as a number of homeschoolers. Most students are sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school, although we do have a number of middle school and college age students spanning an age range of 14 to 20. Arts education plays a seminal role in our overall activities since one of our primary goals is to train members of the orchestra. We work to maintain, improve and promote reputation of excellence through our public performances at Heinz Hall and also through regular (every three years) touring. The most recent tour took place in June of 2014, an artistic triumph with sold out concerts in Prague and Bratislava, plus excellent audiences in Vienna and Salzburg. The next tour is set for June of 2017 and will take place in Spain when the orchestra performs in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. Our programs at Heinz Hall are free to the public, therefore making them available to a very wide, large audience. Our regular venue is Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh with 3 main stage productions each season, some of which may be repeated at various outreach locations. Average attendance at Heinz Hall concerts is 1,855 and much of the audience is made up of young people and family members, many of whom are attending a symphony orchestra concert for the first time or coming to Heinz Hall for the first time. Besides the free concerts at Heinz Hall, other symphony orchestra concerts take place at Calvary United Methodist Church on the North Side (Tiffany Concert Series), Foxburg (Allegheny Riverstone Center for the Arts), PPG Wintergarden, and Shadyside Presbyterian Church (Music in a Great Space) and other venues in the Pittsburgh area. PROGRAMMING SUMMARY Each regular season includes: - Spring Auditions for new members. - 24 Rehearsals for Full Orchestra, September through May. - Sectional Rehearsals with Coaching – six times per season - Concerto Competition for PYSO Members; winner performs with PYSO at Heinz Hall. - Conducting Workshop and Competition for PYSO Members; winner conducts the PYSO in performance at Heinz Hall. In addition to our orchestra program, the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra collaborates with the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras (TRYPO) and City Music Center of Duquesne University (CMC) in Youth Chamber Connection or YC2 that provides chamber music training to talented, young musicians in the tri-state area while engaging in outreach performances in the community that benefit many thousands of people.
